Who would’ve thought…

A small-town kid from Martinsburg, WV. The “skinny kid.” Overlooked. Always the second option or sometimes not even an option at all would end up being in this position today.

For years, I questioned whether I was good enough. I didn’t start playing wide receiver until prep school and had to teach myself the position. Then I arrived at Cornell surrounded by some of the brightest people I’d ever met and found myself asking, “How did I get here?” and “Who am I outside of football?”

At the same time, life at home never stopped. Since middle school, I’ve watched my parents face health challenges. My dad having a stroke that put him in a wheelchair and my mother with her illnesses having aches and pains. Yet they never stopped supporting me and pushing me toward opportunities they never imagined for themselves.

And my brother… man, all the flowers go to him. While I was away chasing my dreams, he carried our family on his back. The sacrifices he’s made for our parents and for me will never be forgotten. You’re one of my heroes, and I’m forever grateful to call you my brother. ❤️🤞🏾

Through it all, I learned to take risks, step into rooms where I wasn’t sure I belonged, build relationships beyond football, and grow confidence in myself. Most importantly, I learned that growth happens when you’re willing to embrace discomfort.

This isn’t a “feel sorry for me” story. It’s proof that obstacles don’t define you but how you respond to them does. So to that small-town kid: Bet on yourself. Embrace failure as much as success. Put in the extra work. Build your community and dream big you’re very much capable!

And no matter where life takes you God will always be in your corner. And remind people where you’re from and don’t let them forget it.
