Our next Alumni Spotlight features Ms. Vivian Scott, who teaches band at Bernard Campbell Middle School in Lee's Summit, MO. Attend our meeting on Tuesday (10/13) to hear Ms. Scott speak about her experiences in her first few years teaching and offer advice to future new teachers!

Ms. Scott's advice to current music education majors at Truman: "My advice to current music ed majors is to soak up everything you can while still in college! Definitely take any opportunity to get teaching experience, but also, remember to focus on all the joy that music brings. Enjoy getting to make music with your peers! Maintaining a passion for music is one of the biggest things that will keep you motivated as you enter the field."

Our next Alumni Spotlight features Joel Gordon, a Truman Music Education alumni who is now a saxophonist and educator in Kansas City. Attend our next meeting (10/21) to hear him talk about his journey and experiences since graduating from Truman!

Mr. Gordon's advice for current students: "My advice to TSU music education majors is to lean into areas that are outside of your comfort, be them jazz improv, marching band, music theory, or ensemble arranging - having a well-rounded music education will set you up for success as a future teacher and educator!"

On April 27, Truman Music Education alumni Mr. Brad Balog was named the Rockwood School District 2025-2026 Teacher of the Year.

Upon recieving this honor, Mr. Balog said "nobody teaches for the recognition. We do it for the kids. The biggest gift of this ride that I've been on is that it's cause for me to stop and reflect on the difference we all make as educators. It is important, and it makes a difference in kids' lives."
