This little life of mine...🏡

Ducky was doing her Saturday morning chore of watering the plants when she sat down, gently touching the leaves and feeling the soil between her fingers. Then, she took a deep inhale and exhale.

Ducky: “Mama, I’m breathing with the plant.”

Me: “I love that! Plants help us breathe.”

Ducky: “Yeah.”

Ducky is an outdoor girlie through and through! Tree hugging, dirt digging, barefoot in the grass, bug-finding kind of girlie. And I love that for her. We love that for her. 💚

I love watching her slow down and appreciate the things she finds beautiful. How she takes time to nurture them, connect with them, and simply be with them. Without even realizing it, she’s learning how to listen to her body, find moments of calm, and root herself in nature.

And that’s what we want for her. For us.

To encourage, foster, and model what it looks like to build a relationship with nature. To find grounding in the soil beneath our feet, peace in the presence of plants, and connection in the little moments we often overlook.

Because rooting ourselves in nature doesn’t always require a grand adventure. Sometimes, it looks like watering a plant on a Saturday morning, touching its leaves, and taking a deep breath together.

This is what rooting looks like!

⭐️@SHELOVESBLACKART INTERVIEW: Jess Owens-Young: Painting the Fullness of Black Life

When Jess Owens-Young began painting in 2018, she set herself a challenge that continues to shape her practice today: to create images that honor the fullness of African-American life. A self-taught artist working across painting, collage, and mixed media, she has resisted the expectation that figuration centering Black subjects must be rooted in trauma or social critique. Instead, her paintings make room for experiences that are often overlooked in contemporary representations of African-Americans. Joy, leisure, aspiration, family, and interior life become subjects worthy of sustained attention. Whether depicting children, athletes, readers, or golfers, Owens-Young invites viewers to consider Black life in the U.S. not as merely oppressive, but as a multi-faceted lived experience.

That vision is beginning to find a wider audience. Since first appearing on my radar through the @SheLovesBlackArt Sponsored Post program in 2021, Owens-Young has steadily expanded the reach of her practice through museum exhibitions, gallery presentations, and the release of her first limited edition with the Chicago-based Arte Haus, a milestone that introduced her work to a broader community of collectors.

One of the things I’ve appreciated most about working on this project with GANGGANG and the Indianapolis Indians is the opportunity to help tell a story that was already here, but that many of us, especially our youth, are still discovering.

My role has been about connecting all the moving pieces and bringing together the history, places, and voices that show why Black baseball is such a foundational part of Indianapolis culture.

A core focus of this work is ensuring our youth are exposed to this history early on so the next generation can see themselves reflected in this legacy.

Along the way, I’ve learned so much myself, from the groundbreaking role women played in the Indianapolis Clowns to the powerful ways sports can preserve history and unite communities.

I am truly proud to help bridge these stories for our city and ensure our youth grow up celebrating this rich heritage.

August is Black Business Month which is a time to recognize and reflect on the contributions of Black entrepreneurs while supporting the businesses that are moving our economy forward.

This month and always, we’re happy to champion the many businesses that are working hard each and every day to carve out their own lane in industries that can be difficult to break into or simply unwelcoming.

We’re honored to work in solidarity with Black-owned organizations and businesses to serve and advocate for all!

Here’s to celebrating those that help us:

🥕Feed and nourish our community
📚Promote literacy
✨Spread joy through all our programs and events

Last night at Victory Field. We loved celebrating the Negro Leagues at Heritage Weekend.

After a year of learning, storytelling, and digging deeper into Indy’s Black baseball history, it was special to see that work come together at the ballpark as the Indianapolis Indians took the field in celebration of the Indianapolis ABCs and got the W.

One more tonight.
