Why Did Saudi Arabia Sell Oil in US Dollars? ⭐🎙️ Watch the full Beyond Titles podcast with Kirttan Shah: https://youtu.be/cxMmVl9y2zQ?si=UR-TfWYfPAOyxJ76

“You don’t have the military ecosystem. I have it. I will support you with my military might — on one condition.”

“When anybody comes to you and asks you for oil, you will only take USD for the oil that you sell.”

That’s how Kirttan Shah frames one of the most fascinating chapters in the rise of the US Dollar and the global oil economy.

Why does so much of the world need US Dollars? Why did the dollar become so deeply embedded in international trade? And what does Saudi Arabia, oil and American military power have to do with it?

In this episode of Beyond Titles, Kirttan takes us back to the geopolitical foundations behind dollar dominance. His explanation connects a simple but powerful chain: the world needed oil, Saudi Arabia was a major oil producer, and the United States had enormous military capabilities.

Kirttan describes the relationship as an exchange of strategic interests: US military support on one side, and oil being sold in US Dollars on the other.

Why would that matter so much?

Because if countries around the world needed oil—and oil had to be purchased using dollars—then those countries also needed access to US Dollars.

And once dollars became essential for one of the world's most important internationally traded commodities, Kirttan argues that the currency became increasingly embedded in other areas of global trade as well.

That creates a fascinating cycle:

Need oil → need dollars → accumulate dollars → hold dollar reserves → conduct more international trade in dollars.

The conversation then goes one level deeper.

If central banks need dollars to facilitate international trade, they also need to maintain foreign-exchange reserves. Kirttan explains that these reserves aren't simply piles of dollar notes sitting inside a vault—they can be held through dollar-denominated assets such as bonds and deposits.

💵 Why is the US Dollar the world's reserve currency? 🎙️ Watch the full Beyond Titles podcast: Link in first comment

“World over, the central banks started accumulating dollars because the trade started happening in dollars.”

But how did one country's currency become so important that central banks around the world hold it, international trade depends on it, and countries need access to dollars simply to buy goods from each other?

In this episode, Kirttan Shah breaks down the power of the US Dollar through a surprisingly simple idea: if a large part of global trade happens in dollars, countries doing that trade need access to dollars.

And once countries need dollars for trade, their central banks also need to maintain foreign-exchange reserves.

Kirttan explains that holding dollar reserves doesn't simply mean a central bank has piles of physical dollars sitting in a bank account. In the podcast, he uses India's forex reserves to explain that these reserves can be invested in US-dollar-denominated bonds and similar dollar assets, potentially generating interest while remaining part of the country's reserves.

This creates a powerful cycle.

Trade happens in dollars → countries need dollars → central banks accumulate dollar assets → global demand for the dollar strengthens its position.

The conversation then moves into oil and geopolitics. Kirttan discusses how the dollar's role became deeply connected with international trade and oil-producing nations, and why attempts to conduct trade in alternative currencies matter to the larger debate about dollar dominance.

But could this dominance eventually end?

That's where the conversation becomes even more interesting.

We discuss the idea that dominant reserve currencies can change over long periods of history and whether another currency could eventually challenge the dollar. Kirttan doesn't claim to know when—or even whether—that transition will happen. His larger point is that the dollar is now so deeply embedded in the global financial system that replacing it isn't as simple as choosing another currency tomorrow.

“Return kitna banega? Number mat batao… percentage batao.”

What if the smartest question to ask before buying an insurance policy is also the question most people never ask?

Watch full podcast - Link in first comment

Insurance is often sold through a powerful emotional combination: protection, certainty and the promise of getting money back. But in this conversation, Kirttan Shah challenges the way we evaluate such policies.

Instead of being impressed by the final maturity amount, his argument is simple: calculate the actual percentage return on the money you've paid. A big number 20 years from now can sound attractive—but without knowing the annualised return, you don't really know how your money has performed. As Kirttan puts it in the episode: “Return kitna banega? Number mat batao, percentage batao.”

The conversation then gets into one of the most interesting behavioural challenges in insurance: “What if I survive and get nothing back?” Kirttan argues that this is precisely where people misunderstand the purpose of insurance. In his framing, life insurance is meant to transfer financial risk to an insurer; he therefore advocates pure term insurance rather than judging insurance by whether the premiums eventually come back.

That distinction changes the question from “How much money will I get back?” to “What am I actually buying—protection or an investment?”

And that may be one of the most important money questions to ask before signing a policy.

This reel is a short extract from our larger conversation on insurance policies, term insurance, personal finance, money mistakes, gold, mutual funds, portfolio allocation, the Indian rupee, global investing and wealth creation in India.

💬 What do you look at first when someone sells you an insurance policy—the maturity value, the return percentage, or the protection it provides?

“Nobody in India is asking this question — boss, return kitna mila, woh bata.”

What if some of the financial products we’ve trusted for years make far less sense once we actually do the math?

What if gold isn't simply something you buy because prices are rising?

What if the rupee continuing to depreciate isn't necessarily a sign that India is doing badly?

And what if one of the biggest mistakes investors make is believing that higher returns can somehow come without higher risk?

In this episode, I sit down with Kirttan Shah, Founder & CEO of Truvanta Wealth, for a deep and refreshingly practical conversation about money, investing, risk and wealth creation in India.

And this isn't a conversation about the next hot stock.

It's about understanding the rules behind the game.

Kirttan breaks down why investors need to start asking for the percentage return, rather than being impressed by the maturity amount an investment promises. He explains his view on why pure term insurance is fundamentally different from policies that mix insurance and investment, and why financial literacy often fails at the most basic level: asking the right question.

Then we go much deeper.

🎙️ IN THIS EPISODE

We unpack the warning signs Kirttan says he spotted around the Franklin Templeton debt-fund crisis, including the unusual borrowing/liquidity indicators he and his team were monitoring before eventually calling clients to exit.

We talk about insurance and one deceptively simple question Kirttan believes every investor should ask before buying a financial product:

“Return kitna banega? Number mat batao. Percentage batao.”

His argument is simple: once investors calculate the actual return rather than focusing on a large maturity value, their perception of many products can change dramatically.

his own portfolio tells a very different story.

This conversation is not about
“where to invest.”
It’s about:
• What the industry doesn’t say out loud
• Why most people misunderstand wealth
• And how money decisions actually get made behind closed doors
