The future of kids’ screentime has arrived.

Low-quality AI-generated content currently dominates children’s media. @trymakakids, a streaming platform run by child development experts, is offering an alternative. Here is what parents can expect when they reach for the screen:

💜 No ads, nothing sold to your kid.
💜 10 curated channels. 0 endless scrolling.
💜 Watch-time limits, held by Maka's friendly caterpillar, Scoot.
💜 Favorites like Sesame Street, Franklin, and Pocoyo, plus new friends for their kids to discover.

Isabel Sheinman 🎤 “Maka was built with child development science and children’s behavior first and foremost.”

tanyellaleta 🎤 “Let’s be real, most parents will reach for the screen at some point. We don’t think that they should be judged for that choice."

Endless thank yous to @sophiabush and @nialauryn for sending these special founders our way!

I’m not anti-screen time. I’m pro being intentional about it👏🏻

That’s why @trymakakids caught my attention. Because I don’t think we need to feel guilty every time our kids pick up a screen, but I DO think we should be asking more questions about the digital spaces we’re putting them in!!

Not all screen time is created equal, and I love seeing options that give parents more peace of mind without taking away the fun for kids.

As a busy mom, I often just need 15 minutes to get a few things done around the house and need something to keep my sons Noah and Micah entertained.

So, I’ve been letting them use Maka (@trymakakids), a kids’ streaming app with shows curated specifically for little ones. Every episode is evaluated for developmental fit, and the platform has no ads, no autoplay into random content, and no endless scrolling. Noah and Micah can settle in with something that’s actually age-appropriate, and I can get some stuff done without feeling like I’m just handing them a screen.

It’s nice knowing I can tidy a few things up while feeling good about what they’re watching. Maka has been such a helpful option for our family when I just need a few minutes. Maka is available in the App store! #ad #Maka_Partner

Big news for our portfolio company Maka! 🎉 Maka is officially live on the App Store!

Founded by Isabel Sheinman and Tanyella Leta, Maka is rethinking screen time for kids 6 and under with thoughtfully curated shows, no ads, and a friendly character named Scoot who helps little ones move on when screen time is up.

Built with child development in mind and developed in collaboration with researchers at the Yale Child Study Center, Maka is bringing a more intentional approach to kids’ streaming.

Congratulations to the founders and team on this exciting milestone!

Hair care day means we’re getting comfy because we have a lot of thick hair to get through lol! I want to take my time, be gentle, and make it an enjoyable experience for both of us. I was hesitant about screen time, but @trymakakids gives me an option I feel comfortable with while making this a time neither of us has to dread 😂😂 You can download Maka in the app store today! #ad #makapartner

🚀 Detroit founders are building some pretty incredible things, and we’re proud to support them along the way.

Our Venture 313 portfolio includes Nox, BRCE, Reportwell, Hush, ChurchSpace, General Orbit and Maka. Seven companies, seven different ideas, and a whole lot of ambition.

Through Venture 313, TechTown Detroit, ID Ventures and Detroit Development Fund are working together to connect Detroit tech founders with the coaching, curriculum and capital they need to build and grow.

Crain’s Detroit recently put the spotlight on Venture 313 and the founders behind these companies.

We’re proud to be part of their journey and excited to see where they go next.

What if the answer to ‘too much screen time’ isn't less screen time, but better content?

That’s the bet that Michigan Central and @Femology ecosystem member Maka is making. With its ad and algorithm-free app, Maka is reinventing kids TV time by curating content with child development experts and researchers in mind, not engagement metrics.

This is just the latest proof point of something bigger happening at Michigan Central. With electric vehicles, advanced manufacturing, mobility, robotics, and now, early childhood development, our founders represent different industries, focused on solving different problems, for different customers.

That’s Michigan Central. We are an ecosystem that brings real solutions to hard problems.
