Something a little different with success coming from Kokoro’s classic car racers 🏆

BC & JC locked out the front row bringing home a 1-2 in both races in the Cobra’s as well as P1 & P3 in the TVR.

Both drivers focusing on adaptability to the changing grip and engagement with the rear axle.

What can you see that’s different here? Not only an interesting car and an equally interesting owner, but also an interesting project to be involved with.

The brief was simple. The client @philipnewsomephoto had a strong family connection to the Mk3 Ford Zodiac but had begun to lose confidence in driving it due to its reliability issues, as well as it feeling underpowered and out of place in modern traffic. We were therefore tasked with extracting more power from the straight-six, improving the brakes, and improving reliability.

For more power, we sourced an Aquaplane manifold that would allow us to convert to a triple SU carburettor @burlenltd setup, along with a decent electronic ignition kit to aid reliability and tuning. With a bit of fettling, we were able to make the manifold fit.

The linkages were more of a challenge, but with some great advice and help from Edd at EB Engineering, we developed a system that provided full throttle and proper balance across all three carburettors. Malc at @ttpperformance then completed the rolling road setup, resulting in a strong and torquey engine.

While the manifold was off, we also improved the vacuum connection to increase the performance of the new old stock brake servo. This made a bigger difference than we expected and meant we could retain the original braking system with only a light overhaul.

Along with many custom-made parts and other minor modifications, too numerous to list, the nearly 60-year-old Zodiac now starts with ease, pulls with modern levels of power, and stops with aplomb. It is a real pleasure to drive, and the client is happy and confident to use his classic whenever the feeling arises.

Fort William for a brief stop with 90 mins sleep on the floor, map plotting and then back into the sweet little Alfa for the final stint of the rally.
We left about 1am and drove through the night via Loch Ness, Inverness and Thurso to arrive in John O’Groats at 11.30am.

After 20hrs of navigating and driving on Day 1 of LEJOG, Nick & I were rather lost at 3am this morning!
It all worked out well and after 3hrs of glorious and refreshing slumber we were ready for the off at 8am this morning 🤥.
Turned out to be a great day albeit exhausting. This is an amazing event…..more later.

Up at 06:00 tomorrow to get ready for an early start on LEJOG 2025. Sharing Nick’s lovely 1970 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV, we’ll be off on a 1500 mile odyssey from Lands End heading to John O’Groats for 10:30 Tuesday morning.
The rally is really tough on car, driver and navigator with long sessions through the nights in deepest Wales and Scotland.
The weather looks set to be biblically wet for the whole event 🙄💦💧.
