Review of Shaghayegh Cyrous' show, "Breathe the Sun," is live on Square Cylinder. "In Shaghayegh Cyrous’ multimedia installation “Breathe the Sun” a vivid cast of characters perform ritualized movements in a wall-length video projection. Discrete chapters of the film are intercut with quotes from the Bundahishn, the Zoroastrian creation story, such as “Fire, whose radiance is from endless hope,” transitioning between scenes. A selection of objects hangs throughout the room, many framed in orange painted boxes, along with a secondary screen and a whirling, potted cypress tree. With this precise arrangement, the Iranian American artist creates an immersive, ritualistic space that acknowledges and bridges the physical and cultural distance between North America and Iran.” https://www.squarecylinder.com/2026/09/shaghayegh-cyrous/ Thank you, Square Cylinder, for the chance to cover this show.

Breathe the Sun is a multimedia video installation by Los Angeles-based Iranian artist Shaghayegh Cyrous, which appeals to ancient Persian origin stories to address the contemporary experience of being caught between social, political, religious, and geographical forces.

Through ancestral memory, mythology, and inherited forms of wisdom, the work becomes a search for light, harmony, and survival amidst instability and conflict.

Presented in Conjunction with Through the Sun August 15th - September 19th at Reisig and Taylor Contemporary
Los Angeles, California @reisigandtaylorcontemporary

CLOSING PARTY, tomorrow 8/22, 2–4pm
Telematic, 323 10th St, San Francisco

Come through for the last afternoon of Hard Reset at Telematic Media Arts. I’ll be there to walk and talk through the show! Last chance to see it in person.

I placed a dating app ad in Silicon Valley seeking a tech executive burdened by guilt over his company's role in ecological collapse. Filtering through hundreds of responses, I began a correspondence with one man willing to submit to eco-humiliation using implements fabricated from the very substances his company's devices depend on: rare earth minerals, lithium-rich water, electronic waste. Over many months of negotiation, the terms of the encounter were worked out between us, while I trained at BDSM houses and conducted materials research in archives across California and Nevada.

Hard Reset is the record of that encounter: a ritual of impact play and disciplinary erotics staged as reckoning, in which desire, guilt, and extraction are made inseparable. The implements are not props but substrate, the same matter that constitutes semiconductors, batteries, and screens, redirected from production into punishment. Filmed from above and from within on four GoPro cameras, the video's own medium repeats its own logic: a technology of extraction turned toward its subject, surveillance recording surveillance. The labor and land embedded in every device return to the body of the executive who profits from them.

Dropping in with intelligent, accomplished, eco-feminist, eco-sexual academics and artists yesterday, paused the weight of my grief for a few hours. What a zinger this crew was at the artist talk, great audience comments and our conversations that ensued after, at the after-party! Super healing for me.

See @jill_s_miller show @tttelematiccc its up through Aug 22! HARD RESET An Eco-Humiliation Ritual learn how tools for transmutation like kink, can be used to transform the culprits and contributions to our climate crises intersectionally.

First two photos by me.
