Ngākau Whiwhita - Ko tā mātou wiki mutunga tuatahi mō ētahi o ā mātou rangatahi. He whakanui hoki i te huritau kotahi tau 🎉 the work for us is not competitive. There is no competition in our spaces unless you’re in the ring or on the mat. The competition we raise is let go of versions of yourself you no longer want to invest in. Let them go before standing on the mat/ring/atamira. But that is learned and observed through time to be able to stand there before you’re ready. There is a time for Tū and there is time for Rongo. Each to their own and the roles may shift. Our work is embodiment of language. Some people may read a book and understand the visuals from the language in their body but it is read. Ours is understanding your personal embodiment from doing it which should be different to all your peers despite doing it together. No story should be the same. And in that…you fill yourself with conscious choices of one’s own learning. Another year passed and our work of conscious guidance and embodiment is away. What an opening 🩸💧 Wai Tawhito is one of those experiences that must be felt to be understood. Tūrongo Collective and Te Whānau Āio took us on a journey last night where worlds collide, the old and the new, the real and the imagined, the beginning and the end of time.

Wai Tawhito is a space where all the senses are awakened, this is an immersive experience that will linger long after you leave 💫

🎟️ Last show at 7:30pm. Grab a tīkiti and we'll see you there | koangafestival.nz/waitawhito

E tū kauwae runga e tū kauwae raro! Whakahōnoretia nga hononga ki nga pūrākau o nga Ariki Tapairu, Nga Toto Kahurangi me nga ao tuhi Māreikura #pukepoto #kōkōwai #teaotawhito haramai te toki. ⚡️

Igniting the stories of our chiefly bloodlines with the reactivation of the stories of our pigments. Among these stories from our to’unga, our old ones are few but still thriving, stories regarding our ancestors in ritual in full pigments.

Pigments are conduits to worlds within worlds, but before we give away more then we should about our Wai Tawhito the stories of our ancient whakapapa/lineage it’s better if you experience it.

We open officially next week for two nights only, book your tickets in for a full throttle ride with no brakes. Let the devices of the current world bring you back to “what’s real”….

As we as Māori know, when you can’t describe it…you are speaking THEIR language, as their language needs no tongue no body ….

We look forward to hosting you in service of ritual 🌀

Tākiritia te pō, tākiritia te ngākau! He kohinga whakaari hei kai mā tātou 💛

Our whare was warm and full last night with the opening of Kōanga Festival 2026. As always we welcomed our kaumātua first with a special afternoon tea and kōrero with our kaimahi and pia, before the kuia pulled out all the moves for a pre-whakaari jig 💃🏻✨

Ka nui te mihi ki a Kawiti Waetford and Amber Curreen for being our kaiwhakataki/MCs for the night as we showcased a range of artistry from opera to spoken word, haka theatre to Shakespeare, waiata and Indigenous storytelling. E mihi ana to all our performers that took to the stage to open up our festival so beautifully 🫶🏽

🩸Our ability to share and express what emulates from our own bloodlines is a relationship that is personal to how each individual relates to their ancestry.

🎥Many may write, film, document, hypothesise about indigenous but stories about us, that don’t exist from within the peoples context cannot reflect us truly.

Each tribe, has differing opinions interpretations and beliefs.

🧬Wai Tawhito expresses relationships to time and ritual is an embodiment, that if forgotten about may interfere with one’s connection. It supersedes time as omniscient.

🌀Our Pou, Wikitoria shares her relationship to the development of Wai Tāwhito and it’s unearthing.

🎭Te Whānau Āio will share an excerpt from Wai Tāwhito in the opening event Tākiritia on September 10th.

Meet our Te Pou Theatre Rangatahi Collective ✨

✊🏽 A small but mighty rōpū of emerging Indigenous artists and leaders who tautoko the kaupapa of Te Pou Theatre and create space for rangatahi to connect, kōrero, collaborate and dream about what’s possible 💫.

Established in early 2025 with support from SkyCity Auckland Community Trust, Creative New Zealand and the whānau of Te Pou, the Collective is all about empowering emerging artists and building stronger pathways into the arts.

And while it may have taken them well over a year to land on an ingoa 😂, this rōpū has been busy behind the scenes - meeting, connecting, sharing whakaaro and representing Te Pou at spaces like Kia Mau and the National Māori Theatre Hui.

Most importantly, the Collective aim to open up space for rangatahi outside of the rōpū to connect with the kaupapa and the leaders within Te Pou Theatre. Whether you’re already in the arts, finding your way in, or simply curious about what’s possible - there’s space for you here.

Meet the rōpū leading this kaupapa:
Tuakoi Ohia & Abbie Rogers, our Co-Chairs
Eden Webster · Jonjon Tolovae · Katrina Marks · Maioha Ki Te Ao Tūroa Allen · Paige Pomana · Rainton Oneroa · Renee Wiki · Shania Bailey-Edmonds

Keep an eye out 👀 exciting opportunities for rangatahi are coming soon 🚀
