Taking it back to V is for Veritas by @fancypants_sf a few months back (post 1/2). Such a pleasure to see the artistry of these queer creators brought to life on stage at the @studsf

drawings inked live & onstage at the Fancypants V IS FOR VELLUM show honoring illustrators at The Stud historic queer bar in Folsom, San Francisco (8/16/2026). if that sounds like one of the coolest and craziest illustration gigs ever. that's because it was.

thank you to the cast and crew @fancypants_sf @studsf for inviting @everydayemil and i to be part of the evening and your wonderful work. where else in the world could i have seen incredible drag performances honoring Yoshitaka Amano, Edward Gorey, Aubrey Beardsley, Erte, Hayao Miyazaki and so many more? it was an honor to be your go-go drawers. 👯

pieces are ink, fountain pen and brush pen on a mix of vellum bristol and translucent polyester paper.

I wanna talk about something!

I’m a natural light portrait and documentary photographer. I am starting to learn artsy flash techniques, but I barely touch it. I don’t use artificial lighting unless absolutely required.

I am not a commercial photographer. I am not a wedding photographer. My work is not clean. My work is dark, and contrasty, and artsy as shit.

And every so often, I get down on myself, “I should be able to take pictures like ___! I should be doing this very popular style!” But, here’s the thing: I did that. I tried that. I tried to make my photography a commercial, trendy thing. And theeeeen I quit photography. But because being trendy killed it for me. (Fuck Pinterest.)

Anyone remember that? The years where I wasn’t a photographer, because I got so burnt out? Yeah. That sucked.

I came back to it, but this time around, I said no, I’m going to make *my* art. I’m going to do art the way that makes sense to me. Now when people ask, will you do ___? Will you take a photo like this? (“Will you do fucking video” ughhhhhhh.) No. I trust myself enough to say no, no I will not, and if you want that, find the photographer for it.

This photo was from a set I did of @tuesdaygloom at @sonnetscribbler’s house on Monday and y’all. I might not be able to do the fancy trendy things. I might not do the exciting studio lighting. But I take moody, artsy portraits and this photo reminded me that I am *so good* at what i do.

I can’t (and don’t want to) do everything. I just want to make beautiful art of my beautiful friends.
