Tracy Chapman | Crossroads | 1989 | Medford,MA

Once a Tufts student wandering the same Medford Streets like me. Then came Fast Cars and fame hit with hands reaching out from everywhere.

Crossroads came telling the exact same story. Not the same but I made my own crossover : Kolkata to Medford.

Thank you Tracy Chapman for all the wonderful words so that we can find strength and love. Different decades, same town, same quiet act of holding your ground while you start over.

Mapping one story at a time. Keep spinning Boston.

In 1683, Mary Webster of Hadley, MA, was tried for witchcraft in Boston and found not guilty. She returned to Hadley, where she was hanged by some men of the village. She survived and lived another 14 years. The great Margaret Atwood - whose grandmother told her that Mary was an ancestor of hers - wrote a brilliant poem (a ten part dramatic monologue) entitled “Half-hanged Mary.”

Tufts pianist and composer Thomas Stumpf was honored to be given permission to set this poem to music. He converted it into operatic form, in which the role of Mary Webster is performed by nine different singers. He also added a two part prologue, the text for which is taken from court documents of 1683 and the writings of the Rev. Cotton Mather.

Stumpf’s work will be premiered by the Tufts Opera Ensemble, under the direction of Carol Mastrodomenico, who has worked closely with the composer to shape the piece. A small group of student instrumentalists will be led by Stumpf and his colleague John McDonald at two pianos.

The performances are in Distler Hall at the Granoff Center on April 23rd and 24th at 8 p.m.

It’s alway an engaging endeavor to discuss the complex music of Gustav Mahler, and especially so with the erudite @jeremyeichler_ music critic, professor, writer and author of Time’s Echo: The Second World War, The Holocaust, and the Music of Remembrance. It was a pleasure to explore ‘Mahler’s Bounty’ today with Jeremy as part of The Mahler Sessions, presented by @tuftsuniversity Department of Music, the Office of the President, and the Center for the Humanities at Tufts #mahler @tuftsmusic

We're bringing back our Community Shoutouts to highlight Jeremy Eichler, John McCann Assistant Professor of Music at Tufts. Eichler has spent his career exploring the intersections of music, history, and memory, from his 18 years as the Boston Globe’s chief classical music critic to writing a book on music and the Holocaust to now teaching Tufts classes on music’s connections to war and nature.

Eichler will be giving a series of talks this spring, called the Mahler Sessions, which will be open to the public. This speaker series, paired with Eichler's class, will help to clarify "the relationship between interpreting a score and interpreting a life—whether we’re talking about Mahler’s or our own.”
