Our day in Venice and Burano was perfect, gorgeous blue skies and the water was sparkling and the bells were ringing in all the churches. I was hoping for a singing gondolier and I got my wish! We took a water taxi out to the island of Burano where all the houses are painted in bright beautiful colors and they look amazing with the backdrop of the Venetian lagoon. You have to take a water taxi from the train station out to the islands and it was wonderful to pass around Murano and see all the glass factories lined up on the waterfront. Burano is known for its lacework and there were so many beautiful examples of their lace work as we browsed all the tiny shops. We found one ceramic artist that made tiny houses in all the bright colors of Burano. The beautiful old church was filled with people singing and praying at the funeral for the local fire chief. Firefighters lined the casket procession dressed in their turnout gear. It was such an unexpected and moving moment.
my favorite shop wandering the streets of Venice was a costume shop with beautiful heavy brocade fabrics. They made brocade covered shoes and coats for people to dress up for Carnaval. I brought home some gorgeous pieces of fabric. We took the bullet train and arrived back in Florence 16 hours later tired and sunburned after an incredible day!!

Oh yes, Let’s make something pretty…. It’s dyeing day in Italy at @lightandfireretreat and the weather couldn’t be more gorgeous! I loved all the color experimentation, Tiffany bought some Beautiful Trims at the Arezzo market to dye and Judi tore one of her striped shirts up to overdye. We started out the day dyeing velvet and ribbons and then after lunch we started building the mushroom armatures and stitching the stems and adding velvet caps. So many gorgeous velvet collections at the end of the day and oh my all of the mushrooms made were simply stunning, each one unique and beautiful. I love traveling and creating with a group of ladies, we have so many similar interests and all the day trips and excursions are all planned. It makes for such a relaxing and fabulous adventure. Yvette, Reneé and Elena, you women are my heroes - my actual HEROES. Your love for our families, your faith in the Lord and your solid senses of humor are what I strive to have everyday. Each of you give the most amazing hugs, the best of advice (even if I don’t always heed it) and can cook a damn delicious meal. I still have so much to learn from you. Yesterday was beautiful. I’m incredibly humbled by all the love that surrounds us. From our families, our friends - both old and new. Thank you all for coming to celebrate us yesterday, we’re beyond lucky to share this special time with each of you. We love you.

Happy streams running wild in the Adelaides AVA in Paso Wine Country after the largest rainfall of 4 inches on March 21, the first day of Spring.

I always look forward to receiving word from Laird Foshay (Rangeland Wines) via emails that offer lovely, REAL glimpses into wine country living in Paso. He sends them out 1x a month to their wine club + grass-fed meats club.

From Laird’s March email newsletter: “March, has come in like a lion + shows some promise of rescuing us with rain last week + more in the forecast.
.
Nevertheless, we are staying busy in good weather + bad. Winemaker Paul Hinschberger + a crew of volunteers bottled 800 cases of wines in February, including some 2016 reds, the 2017 Rosé + our first ever Savignon Blanc. The volunteers included the "Bottle Beast" Jeremy Thompson, a local club member who has lifted literally every Rangeland bottle onto the line for the last five years. His diligence + strength have been rewarded with Rangeland Wines, of course.

Vineyard Manager Patrick Hamilton guided a small army of contract laborers through 40 acres of pruning last month + the sheep are happily grazing the vineyard cover crop he planted last fall. Now, If only Patrick could keep his midget dog Rebel from trying to copulate with our Great Pyrenees teenager Daphne. At one point Rebel drove her, (or did she lead him?) on a wild escapade miles off the ranch, which ended with them both in the San Luis Obispo county humane society penitentiary for deliquent horny pets.

My adorable, hardworking but wacky wife Lisa often feels like singing "It's the most wonderful time of the year" in March, when there are baby lambs + calves being born every day on the ranch. But all this livestock + the drought conditions make work very lively for Ranch Manager Dane Jensen. He has to move the animals + feed them hay much more frequently in a drought. Dane still manages to look like Clint Eastwood, even as a couple of hundred sheep scatter wildly through my household landscaping + a geyser of water rises from the irrigation pipe they just broke off. Just another day at Adelaida Springs, aka Calamity Ranch.” Hope you can visit Rangeland + meet Laird. Cheers!
