A New York Minute 🤍

I’m sitting at JFK with a delayed flight back to South Carolina, but my heart is full, and all I can think is: Damn, what a gift.

This weekend I got to see my oldest, best friend in the world—the one who just had her second baby. How is that even possible? I swear just yesterday we were four years old, running around playing tag at the end of the block.

This weekend I stayed with my high school and college best friend—the one I lived with in the city for five years. The only one I could ever live with, as long as we both refilled the ice cube trays and Brita. The one who is easy and kind and hilarious and safe.

This weekend I spent time with high school, college & city friends, sitting at a bar for seven hours on a perfect, sunny, 75-degree NYC day. Chatting and laughing like no time has passed. The only difference now is my cocktails are usually mocktails—but still, I am me & we are we, and the familiarity is comforting.

This weekend I spent time with soul family—friends I met much later in life. The kind of friends who, when I’m with them, all I can think is: How have I lived so long without you in my life?

This weekend, I spent time on Long Island—the place I grew up. The place where, when the train conductor says the name of my hometown, it makes me a little sad and wonder if I’ll ever end up back there.

This weekend I spent time on the East Side—the place I lived for five years with friends. When life consisted of work, happy hours, Bravo TV, Seamless orders, and bars on the LES.

This weekend I spent time on the Upper West Side—the place I lived for three years in my very first solo apartment. The place I made into a little sanctuary away from the chaos of the city. The place that held me through so many beautiful and challenging moments. The place I really became myself.

This weekend, I was home—with the people who are my home.

Damn. What a gift.
