Kenzi started off her fall 2026 hunting season with a bang yesterday in North Carolina, hunting with the Live Like Megan Foundation, getting her first black bear!

Most of Friday was a travel day by airline and rental car to Marion, North Carolina, where we got to meet volunteers and hunters at the evening dinner. We decided that we wouldn't hunt until the next afternoon, as with 4 people and a wheelchair and the additional racket getting into the blind could spook something in the dark.

We met at 1 pm Saturday, and I attached Kenzi's air vacuum trigger to the Savage rifle chambered in .350 Legend the foundation had for us to use. After attaching the trigger to the rifle triggerguard and to the 12v battery, I checked for activation a few times, and it was good to go.

We loaded up and drove to the blind, unloaded Kenzi and the gear, and Jason took the pickup partway down the mountain and walked back. We settled in for the hunt, with periodic light rain and falling acorns and persimmons providing background listening.

I told Kenzi to remind me to take the safety off the rifle as they have a safety on the vacuum air trigger - this plays into the story. After about 2 hours, Jason spotted the bear coming up on the logging roll and said it was a shooter. I sighted the rifle and whispered "good" for mom to help Kenzi with the vacuum tube, and the clicking reminded me the safety was on. I whispered to them to wait and slid the safety off while the bear glanced our way from 70 yards. I whispered "good" and Kenzi fired quickly. The bear turned and ran down the backside of the slope. Jason went to check for sign before rain started again, and I went with him to find the bear about 100 yards down the mountain game trail.

We met back at the pavilion for the evening meal, and Kenzi made a whole lot of new friends! Now we get to sightsee for a few days and meet at the pavilion nightly for Kenzi to retell her story.
