The last Tumi’s Radio night at Eight held twenty women DJs playing twenty-minute sets. On Thursday 29 October it hands the decks to creators, YouTubers and bedroom DJs you know from your feed. The idea has not moved: new South African sound, and room for whoever is making it. Tickets on Howler. Send this to whoever you’re going with.

My story, in the October edition of Sound Press Magazine. 🥹✨

There’s something really special about seeing your journey reflected back to you, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share a little more of mine.

I’m honoured to be featured in the October digital edition of Sound Press Magazine by @proaudio__ (also known as Pioneer South Africa) where I get to speak about my journey, my relationship with music and sound, and the experiences that continue to shape me as an artist.

A heartfelt thank you to @proaudio__ and @pioneerdjsouthafrica for the recognition, and for creating space for artists to share the stories behind the sound. 🤍

women are makers.

We make homes. We make communities. We make culture. We challenge patterns, break cycles, create things that haven’t existed before and somehow convince everyone else that it was always possible.

I’m still in awe of how powerful it felt to watch 20 women play, dance and connect freely together. The fact that our presence, our independence and even our movement through the world can be perceived as a threat can be deeply unsettling. And yet we persist and have women like @tumi_moliko who do things that have never been done before!🥹🙏🏾

And maybe that’s why it breaks my heart that the world can still feel so unsafe for us.💜

To be a woman is to know that your body, your presence, your independence and sometimes simply your existence can make you a target.

Despite the precautions we take, the fear we carry, the spaces we avoid and the ways we are taught to make ourselves smaller we will continue to make something out of nothing.🏆

That’s one of the most beautiful things about us that even in a world that asks us to shrink, we keep finding ways to expand.🥹💐

Thank you thank you thank you @tumisradio
creating that space where power is not something to fear, but something to actively participate in, celebrate, protect and make room for.🥹🙏🏾💋

Also a/o to the men who supported the vision!

When it comes to first gigs, this is the best as it can get. Thank you @tumi_moliko for giving me the opportunity to play at @tumisradio. What a way to end Women’s Month - with 19 other female DJs, playing for 20mins to honor the 20 000 women who marched in 1956. Listening to everyone’s sets, I realised how incredible women are and how they are able to do anything they set their mind to. I hope we see more female only lineups at events!

I can’t wait to see where this DJ journey takes me. Thank you to all of my friends who came to see me spin some tunes 🤙🏽🎶🎧 I’ll be dancing with you at many more gigs to come (Inshallah) ❤️
