you’ve felt it before. you just didn’t have a name for it.

swipe through and see if you recognize yourself somewhere in here ➡️

this is what we mean when we say we build social capital. it’s not a buzzword. it’s the stuff that makes the city feel like somewhere you actually belong – the favors, the introductions, the rooms that feel like home before anyone says a word.

phx is growing fast. we wanna make sure it’s also deepening.

Hard to believe! From @sombraphx:

“🌞 The ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade project has come to an end! All nine shade structures have been taken down. 🌞

This temporary installation, made possible through support from Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, was never meant to be permanent. Its strength was in its temporary nature: a bold opportunity to test new ideas, materials, and collaborations between artists, communities, and civic leaders.

Thank you to all the artists, partners, and community members who made this experiment possible.”

It was such a treat to work on public art with a relatively short arc (only about a year) amidst the slate of our other multi-year permanent projects.

“Botanical Canopy”, our ¡SOMBRA! temporary shade structure on the bridge at Cortez Park, came down in late October and we’ve been getting a number of inquiries about where this concept goes next….

We *can* say that this inaugural iteration had some really lovely, site-specific details….from the ability to integrate with existing infrastructure and the shadow play on the walkway to the excellent look-out framing that showcased other park features.

Where to next?

So Fun! Reminds Us that Art Can Be Just That
By Kat Davis and Brett Bezio @breadbox_art

On view at the Vision Gallery in Chandler, So Fun! explodes onto the art scene a bold, colorful world of maximalism. With technicolor, glitter and an exuberance I have little seen since the heyday of 90s Nickelodeon, I’m brought to question and reconsider the idea of excess in art and beyond. The show provides a champion against the tyranny of minimalism still profuse in our culture and aesthetics (though the Gen Z “cluttercore” trend is doing well to tramp on it).

Despite what minimalism suggests, we don’t want to declutter our minds and give more space to sharp rationality. We want to meander and play and be distracted from everything else in the news cycle. Here,we’re given a new world of objects and sensations to focus on instead.

In a fashion similar to the exhibition’s ethos, we’re going to rapid-fire some observations: see slides.

The elegance of So Fun! is the freedom with which you are able to engage with it. You can just pass through, look at the shiny things, feel the softness, and walk out, or you can linger and ponder. The show is happy with either approach.

See it before it closes @visiongalleryaz November 2!

With only about a week until we deinstall at Cortez Park, we’d like to share: ☀️ ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade ☀️ the documentary!

“A story of art, community, and shade in the heart of Phoenix. Hear from Mayor Gallego, the Office of Heat Response & Mitigation, Office of Arts & Culture, and the artists who brought it to life.

Funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Public Art Challenge, ¡Sombra! supports temporary shade structures as a vital tool for testing creative solutions to address Phoenix’s extreme heat. Projects like these spark community dialogue and activate public spaces to inspire long-term change.”

Watch the documentary now at sombraPHX.org. #sombraPHX

☀️ It’s bike season, and almost the weekend! Have you been out on Tempe’s multimodal equestrian trail at Country Club Way?

The Sundial features in our shade node design allow you to engage with different parts of the structure throughout the day—the side panels catch the changing light and cast shadows on the terrazzo floor, drawing us from the ground beneath our feet way out to the cosmos with ideas of planetary alignment. What a trip, right?
