Like many others, my older brother introduced me to fighting games when I was younger. We always had a friendly rivalry, but @tunk45 would always teach me my character’s moves and combos so I wasn’t just mashing buttons. Eventually I fell in love with Marvel vs Capcom 2, and I spent all my free time trying to learn new techniques and playing online. This led to my love for other games like Street Fighter 3rd Strike, MVC3, but then my interests shifted to music. What really brought me back to the FGC was my brother and my first time going to Evo. It’s one of the biggest Majors of the year and so many players come out to compete. They have one of the largest free play arcades, up and coming games can be played before release, and tons of amazing moments happen each year. It’s really impossible to explain just how amazing this place is, you just have to experience it. My dad, who doesn’t play a single fighting game (except for mashing hand slaps with E. Honda), loves watching the high level gameplay and how passionate everybody is. The biggest highlight of this year is seeing my brother make it out of Tekken pools and into the top 256 out of 2,000+ competitors. Seeing him achieve something only the top 10% of players in the world can do was one of the proudest moments I’ll never forget. There’s lots of hype seeing other people make incredible comebacks in a huge arena, but nothing was more hype than me jumping up and down behind my brother and fist pumping as he beat one of the toughest opponents in his bracket to move on to the next round. Anyway, here are some highlights from my weekend at #evo2025 for you all. If you haven’t played a fighting game in a while I hope this inspires you to pick one up and play, have fun, and become a part of one of the greatest gaming communities in the world.
