Feedback can be tricky but this is some advice that undoubtedly made my track ‘Real Friendship’ better:

1) Add a fatter snare - I got this feedback from @tunnelsigns during @pressplay.series , a series of events put on by @mtra inviting music producers to hear their demos on a club system. I was relatively new to producing and had erred on the side of caution with bolder elements for fear of blowing eardrums out, but hearing it on @club77sydney sound system plus the advice I received was the green light I needed to go a bit more aggressive.

2) More top end - I found energy seemed to dip when I played the track in a set, which wasn’t the vibe I was going for. @odjekmusic recommended adding more top end which sent me down a deep dive on achieving a balanced mix, and realising the song (that I had already gotten mastered at that point 🥲) wasn’t what I wanted it to be yet.

3) Pick your best elements and start over - During a @beatbrewery.eora workshop with @assemblercode , I was struggling to implement anything I learnt on this track because I had loaded on effect after effect and wasn’t sure which way was up anymore. After a discussion about “letting songs go”, we spoke about picking the essence of a track and starting a fresh project. This let me pick better base sounds which made my mixing process way easier. I then had it mastered by @subhuman.engineering and it was good to go.

4) Run everything through a preamp - A tip rather than song-specific advice but I remembered @erikluebs mentioning during a workshop at @rikota.studio to run tracks through a preamp for harmonic distortion and I think I wound up doing that on every single track and it took the mix to another level. Forgot to put this in the video but so valuable!

My debut single ‘Real Friendship’ is up for premiere now on the @mixmaganz soundcloud (link in bio!) and is out everywhere else on Tuesday 22/9
