One of the "Landscapes?" I've been writing, "Ucross", is out today — published by Tupelo Quarterly (@tupelo_quarterly), in a "Six Poets" folio edited by Karla Kelsey (@karla.kelsey), along with works by Rosemarie Waldrop, Hajar Hussaini (@kbl.volumist), Alan Gilbert (@alan_d_gilbert), Ry Cook (@ry_p_cook) and G.C. Waldrep. Come read the Donkey creek freezing up little by little, the way I was watching it happen during a Ucross (@ucrossfoundation) residency in November/December 2024. Many thanks, also, to Tawni Schuler (@tawnishuler) and Jessie van Eerden (@monathehound), first readers of this poem.

You’ve written a short story that has no guns, no bravado, no screaming matches.

Your characters have deep-seated needs and fears, but they’re doing everything they can to avoid conflict.

How do you frame the drama and keep readers riveted?

𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐩 has a few things to show you in “𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐍𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐲”…

“In the pantheon of monsters, it’s not just about blood, I take it all. Track intestines, guzzle kidneys, binge scalp silk. To fear might as well be incantation. To croon is corpuscular. To moon is mayhem.”

Genre-Bending, Gender-Breaking: A Folio of Queered Poetics curated by marvel, @camiloloaizabonilla for @tupelopress + @tupelo_quarterly. Love to other poets on this list who radiate along side me! @crsed_poet @feiikashumari 💙🌊 thank you @bjanepr for your impetus 👹

Thank you for uplifting my goth emo butch, trans, tibok, queer ass, blood thirsty Pilipinx folklore poem in three parts. To every time our relationships are hidden, how we bring them to the stars & surface. Is this a poem about aswangs or vampires? About topping & stigma? Wlw? Oceanic steam? About erasure being colonial? About the unsaids and the unsettled? Something like that. Swipe right ➡️ link in bio.

For the Aswangs who are your best friends (a triad) Soundtrack: Fade Into You, Mazzy Star.

I can't believe it's been almost a month since I guest edited “Genre-Bending, Gender-Breaking: A Folio of Queered Poetics” — a folio of queer poetry in queer forms by queer writers — for @tupelo_quarterly!

In this folio, @brownroundboi, @chinginchen, @crsed_poet, and @feiikashumari each work across disciplines in distinct ways to hold space for play and joy in the face of trans and queer violence and erasure. Check out it today at tupeloquarterly.com! Link in my bio ✨

Thank you to Tupelo Quarterly for publishing my essay about using non-English words in primarily English language poetry. This essay comes out of a presentation that poets Sara R. Burnett, Majda Gama and I gave at the Writer's Center this spring. I use Italian language - a family heritage language I learned at Smith College - throughout my two books (Viable and Perforated, Lily Poetry Review Books.)
You can find the essay in the Summer Literary & Arts Journalism Showcase:

In a new review from Tupelo Quarterly, Tara Ballard explores the vision at the heart of Maurya Simon’s The Blue Bridge, calling the book “a collection of celebration and lament, joy and grief, wit and poignancy”–one that confronts climate crisis and species loss while still making room for wonder, connection, and the possibility of change.

In this issue of Tupelo Quarterly, poet Jessica L. Walsh and I talk about sobbing in a McDonald's parking lot post-book launch, ancestral jump scares, and selecting both responsibility and realism.

In BLOWDOWN, her newest collection, Walsh’s poetic voice is quintessentially hers–a distinctive, tell-it-to-ya-straight, hardscrabble rasp replete with nihilistic humor, punchy syntax, and a frank wish for our well-being.

After you read our interview, hurry up and check it out.

A gorgeous interview with Whitney Koo, author of Any Gesture, by Tiffany Troy. They discuss grief, making sense of life after encountering death, the ethics of elegy, and so much more. Read the full interview at Tupelo Quarterly.

Big thanks to @tiffany.troy for her deep attention to the musical & thematic nuances of PYRRHIC SYMPHONY. Such a pleasure speaking with her & I’m honored to have this interview included in the newest @tupelo_quarterly, which is jam-packed with so many incredible poets. A few choice cuts follow but catch the whole piece—which includes everything from John Donne to the questionable art of selfies—via the link in my bio.
