Collaborating on work for the @powerhousemuseum with my Mother @turbly - Flesh blobs, Auslan hands, gestural painting. Lots of conversation’s around being a CODA came up during the birth of this collaboration. It’s not that I forget I’m a CODA it’s just I’ve never associated with that title as it’s normal. Mum asked me the other day if I talk to people through the walls… ? for example shouting out to someone downstairs like “hey can you bring the washing up” I was so perplexed ?!!? Talk through a wall?? How would I hear ? Absolutely not, reminding me of traits I’ve learned that become my normal, or the simplicity of legitimately not being able to watch anything without subtitles.. there’s many things you only get when you grow up with a deaf parent/parents, the ground stomp for attention.. The deaf nod when they didn’t get what you said but can’t be arsed to repeat it so they nod & fake smile. Turning the lights of so they can’t lip read you as a angsty teen / her taking them off to ignore me , lip reading from across the room gossiping in broad daylight. A movie called CODA came out a while ago, it won so many awards it follows a girl with deaf parents I never saw it but was fascinated by how many people were moved by the scene where the parents come to watch their daughter sing in choir but when it cuts to the parents POV her singing is mute, so many people & friends reached out around that time saying along the lines of I never thought of this, I never thought of that not realising they were talking about something that’s a reality or what we consider normal. My dad is a bass player, not only is he that he is a musical geek, it’s his passion it’s all I know. From my dad I know sound from my mum I know silence I sit in a confusing world at times. I wish my mum could hear me laugh, I wish my mum could hear my son laugh, yet thats MY WANTS, she’s happy she doesn’t wish to hear, we often project our understanding onto others, all my mum knows is silence, she sees. I love my mum, I love being her custom built interpreter, some days I might say that a bit different 🤪 & I’m sure my other CODAS can relate on that.

Gabbing on with Mum as usual. Sometimes I forget I’m a CODA & that’s why I’m so overly expressive. When you can’t hear emotion you must see emotion. Anyways you can see where I get it from. 🦜 @turbly

Welcome to our vintage home - a place to immerse yourself in the world of midcentury design, the best way to do that is test the merchandise.

We want you to try every chair, feel how soft Icelandic sheepskin is and hold vintage ceramics - how else are these beautiful pieces going to find their forever home?
