We created our blue BeCAUSE We Care bracelets to honor and support a cause dear to our friend Bob Saget’s heart @srfcure His sister passed away from this awful scleroderma and we wish to continue his legacy by helping fund research for others still fighting, like Kierra Flowers. Today is Bob Saget’s birthday, and while we think of him everyday, today is extra special.

CLC MEMBER FEATURE: My name is Kierra Flowers, and I am a 34-year-old woman, living with Scleroderma. I’m from Detroit, MI but currently living in Los Angeles, CA maintaining a demanding, but rewarding career in Television Production. When I’m not working, I enjoy watching home renovation, sports & food competition shows. Basically, anything reality! I also consider myself a foodie and wine connoisseur.

I was diagnosed with Scleroderma in June of 2020. I had never heard of this disease. I knew something was wrong because I was exhausted all the time. I used to joke that once I turned 30, my body felt like it was breaking down. That was partially true. Turns out, all the aching, fatigue, stiffness, hands turning white (Raynaud’s Syndrome), and hypopigmentation had to do with an overproduction of collagen in my body. Basically, my body tricked my tissues into thinking they were injured which caused inflammation, that then triggered an overproduction of collagen. Too much collagen causes the organs to harden. Scleroderma literally means hard skin. The largest organ this disease tends to affect is the skin. However, Scleroderma can affect internal organs as well. In my case, my muscles, skin, GI tract & heart are all involved. The last year was particularly challenging as my heart started to show more damage. I was diagnosed with heart failure as well and now have a defibrillator implanted in my chest.

While all that sounds like a lot, I am blessed to have AMAZING doctors at UCLA. They have worked with me, and I am at a place where I am starting to feel tons better. There are times I have questioned why I became ill in the first place. But, since my diagnosis, my world has opened in ways I never imagined. I have met so many amazing warriors who continue to inspire me every day. I have found a strength that I didn’t realize I had. Yes, at times, it is difficult, but it’s not the challenges you face that make you who you are, it’s how you overcome them. To anyone living with a chronic illness, please know that you are an inspiration to many. Not everyone is equipped to handle the challenges you face, but you, YOU WERE BUILT FOR THIS!! Stay strong my warriors

Today is #WorldSclerodermaDay, a day created to tell people what it means to have scleroderma, recognize those who live with it, and share why we need a cure. We’re honored to share from members of the scleroderma community here.

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disorder—a rheumatic disease that causes inflammation in the skin and other areas of the body. The body’s own immune system makes too much collagen, leading to the hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues (ie: fibrosis). Currently, there is no cure. But significant progress has been made in managing its symptoms and some of the most serious complications.

This progress is only possibly through collaboration of our entire community—your help is critical to advancing research. Thank you SO MUCH for all you have done to help raise awareness and funds this month by telling your stories, hosting fundraisers, and sharing information about scleroderma with your networks.

Though Scleroderma Awareness Month is coming to an end, spreading awareness doesn’t stop. Join us as we #SayScleroderma, today and until a cure is found. Learn more about all the ways you can make a difference at srfcure.org. #scleroderma #sclerodermawarrior #sclerodermaresearch #srfcure
