Happy 4th! There's nothing more American!

This holiday includes so many fond memories from time spent in nature with my family and Dad #tedturner in wide, open spaces and a place for creatures like bison to roam. For me, the bison is a symbol of freedom and as the symbol of the country as our national mammal.

As we celebrate our nation's 250th birthday I'm proud of one way our family foundation - @turnerfdninc helped make possible an exhibition about bison currently on view at the @smithsonian. July is also National Bison Month! #bisonmonth

Now open, "Bison: Standing Strong" explores the remarkable story of an iconic animal that shaped North American landscapes for more than 100,000 years and anchored Indigenous lifeways for generations. Pushed to the brink of extinction in the 19th century, bison survived thanks to dedicated conservation efforts - including my Dad's efforts today on Turner lands. Today, they stand strong as an enduring symbol of survival and resilience.

As our nation celebrates #independenceday, let's take a moment to deeply appreciate our freedom. May we treat the bounty of the land, the creatures who call them home, and one another with respect each and every day.

"Bison are not just a part of our history, they're a part of our future. They're a vital part of our ecosystem, and we need to do everything we can to protect them." - Ted Turner

Today, we’re honoring the life of Ted Turner (1938–2026)

A media pioneer, conservationist, philanthropist, and true American original, Ted changed the world in more ways than one. From founding CNN and transforming modern television, to winning the America’s Cup and protecting millions of acres of wild land, his impact stretched far beyond any single industry.

In 2015, the Turtle Conservancy visited Ted at his property in northern Florida to interview him about conservation, endangered species, and the future of our planet. At the end of the shoot, Ted agreed to pose with a native Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus), an image that would later become the cover of The Tortoise magazine in 2016.

“Save Everything” was his motto. And he lived it.

From supporting the recovery of American bison, black footed ferrets, gray wolves, and Bolson tortoises, to protecting nearly two million acres of habitat across the United States, Ted helped redefine what conservation at scale could look like.

The Turtle Conservancy has been honored to work alongside the Turner Endangered Species Fund for more than a decade, including efforts supporting the rewilding of the Bolson Tortoise (Gopherus flavomarginatus) in New Mexico.

Rest in peace to a visionary whose legacy will continue to shape conservation for generations to come.

One week ago, we lost Ted Turner. Today, we honor his life, legacy, and impact that expanded beyond media and business and into the landscapes, wildlife, and ecosystems he strove to protect.

Through his conservation efforts, Turner helped preserve millions of acres of open land across the American West and South, which helped to create critical habitats for native species and champion the restoration of bison populations in North America. His belief that conservation and stewardship were essential to the future of our planet inspired generations of landowners, environmentalists, and nonprofit organizations alike.

We extend our condolences to his family, friends, and all those inspired by his work. May we continue carrying forward the vision he so passionately advanced.

A Tribute to the Sovereign Spirit: For Ted Turner (1938–2026).

Never call this lake a millpond.

Sovereign Shore (Kohler-Andrae State Park, WI, USA) — I started late. I was fighting the clock, driving toward the park through a cold, relentless rain. Experience has taught me a specific kind of optimism: the most cinematic light often breaks just as the storm does.

I was right. I pulled in with barely an hour of light left on the horizon. Within minutes, she appeared near the desolate roadside. I stopped, popped the trunk, and worked quickly to pull a body and long lens from my Pelican case. I took a deep breath, knowing you cannot enter the space of a wild animal with an anxious demeanor. I approached her slowly, speaking softly—not as a photographer, but as a guest in her space.

I eventually put the camera down. I turned my head away and took a few paces back to yield the ground. That disarmed her. Feeling safe, she closed the distance until she was just a few feet away. When she began to groom herself—her teeth visible as she worked through her coat—I knew I had a model of rare trust. This specific maintenance behavior is only seen when a deer feels entirely secure in its environment, prioritizing self-care over flight.

From this proximity, the detail was staggering. I found myself lost in her big, black, beautiful eyes—there is a depth to them that feels both dark yet incredibly warm. Above them, I could see her vibrissae, those specialized hairs that act as a delicate motion alarm system. It was a deeply heartfelt exchange. In those moments, she granted me a level of special access rarely afforded to a stranger with a lens. Having that kind of silent, reciprocal bond with a wild animal is rare and incredibly special.

Sending love to the Turner family. The Turner Foundation @turnerfdninc supported my listening effort with doctors and healers across the United States and it was one of my hardest journeys - in the middle of the effort Covid changed everything. I worked with Ted Turner’s daughter @lauraturnerseydel on this important effort with her amazing organization Mothers and Others for Clean Air and when I stayed at her home I was inspired talking with his granddaughter @vasserseydel about her deep sea mining work with the Oxygen Project. I’ve been lucky to collaborate with his daughter Jennie Turner Garlington’s PBS show EcoSense for Living and as a fellow Denver University alum I’ve cheered on his grandson @johnrseydel in his sustainability work for the City of Atlanta. And of course I’m so grateful for @janefonda’s work in the Gulf Coast communities educating about the impacts of LNG and petrochemicals. Ted Turner’s legacy lives on through these people he loved and so many healing ripples throughout the world with the United Nations, CNN, Captain Planet, Turner Foundation and so much more all the way to little me. This video is from our listening effort Planet Prescription and includes inspiring words from Tanya Davis @carats7. THE MISSION OF THE TURNER FOUNDATION IS TO PROTECT AND RESTORE THE NATURAL SYSTEMS – AIR, LAND, AND WATER - ON WHICH ALL LIFE DEPENDS. WITH GRATITUDE, WE HONOR OUR FOUNDER, TED TURNER, WHO ASKED US ALL, QUITE SIMPLY, TO SAVE EVERYTHING. TURNER FOUNDATION, ESTABLISHED 1990” 1938-2026

Ted Turner was my boss and became a close friend. A few years ago, I spent time with him in Montana learning about his mission to “save everything.” Thank you, Captain Planet.

Rest in peace, Ted Turner—one of our greatest conservationists.

Managing nearly 2 million acres, he helped restore ecosystems and protect wildlife across North America. He played a key role in saving the American bison, building the world’s largest private herd of 50,000+, and supported endangered species through his conservation efforts.

His legacy proves that large-scale land stewardship can restore biodiversity and inspire lasting environmental change. A great loss, condolences to the family.

The DAE Foundation had an amazing 2025 marking our 25th anniversary in November a quarter century of empowering student athletes! Check out the year in review to see how the DAE Foundation worked with our community partners to impact lives of student athletes in the Lowcountry.

Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, we are able to offer all of our community programs for free, and 10% of our student athletes receive scholarships for their participation in our basketball education programs. A huge shout out to the individual supporters who made a donation. And what we do isn’t possible without the support of our business and community partners: National Land Realty, Rockwell Construction, Coastal Creek Design, Shelly Leeke Law Firm, Paisano’s Pizza, and the Turner Foundation.
