Labor Day weekend is a pretty good excuse to open some great bottles, but this weekend reminded me that the bottles are really just part of the story.

We spent the weekend with several close friends and their families, sharing a pretty ridiculous lineup: a magnum of 2022 Mowe Sauvignon Blanc, a magnum of my birth year 1979 Château Haut Brion, 2022 Tusk, 2005 Vincent Girardin Corton Perrières, 2018 Ceritas Trout Gulch TG 36 Chardonnay and 2012 Blankiet Prince of Hearts.

The 1979 Haut Brion was the rare treat. Perfectly stored, fully mature and beautifully tertiary, with layers of cigar box, cedar, earth and all the complexity that comes with nearly five decades of aging. A birth year bottle that delivered exactly what you hope for from a wine like this.

The Mowe was as incredible as ever and remains one of my benchmarks for Napa Sauvignon Blanc. The 2022 Tusk was opulent and flashy, exactly what you would expect from the vintage, but in the best possible way. Young, lush and irresistibly charming.

The 2005 Girardin Corton Perrières was drinking perfectly, with that wonderful combination of maturity, texture and Burgundy character. The 2018 Ceritas Trout Gulch brought intense acidity and plenty of complexity, while the 2012 Blankiet Prince of Hearts was simply charming and incredibly enjoyable.

But somewhere between the bottles, the conversations and the glasses being passed around the table, the real point of the weekend became pretty obvious.

The sounds of our children playing in the background. The laughter coming from the house. Friends and their families together, enjoying a long Labor Day weekend and not worrying about what comes next.

Those are the moments that matter.

The bottles were incredible, but sharing them with people you care about, in a house filled with laughter and joy, is what these moments are really all about.

A pretty great way to close out the summer.

Seven bottles. One pass and it’s probably not the one you’d expect.

Full story in allocations.
