6’2” 2028 Mansfield Timberview guard Willy Bakonga turned heads at the GASO event in Duncanville.

Bakonga gave defenders plenty to handle with his quickness, ability to get into the paint and confidence creating offense. The young guard showed flashes of his potential and wasn’t afraid to take advantage of opportunities with the ball in his hands.

With plenty of room to grow and a promising skill set, Bakonga is another emerging piece in Timberview’s backcourt worth following as his game continues to progress.

For Mansfield Timberview head coach Matt Workman, preparing players for the next level starts with making sure college coaches know exactly what they’re getting.

“They’re getting a winner.”

Workman believes the Wolves’ players leave the program understanding how to compete and win, with an identity built around the areas Timberview emphasizes every day.

“We put a lot of emphasis on defense and hustle and effort and toughness.”

With coaches on staff who have experienced Division I basketball themselves, Timberview understands that reaching the next level requires much more than putting points on the board. Workman wants his players fundamentally prepared to defend, conditioned to compete and willing to give maximum effort.

“It’s not offense mainly; it’s defense.”

That defensive mentality has become something the program takes pride in, and Workman believes it separates his group from many others.

“I do believe that we play harder than most and that we play defense better than most.”

Ultimately, everything goes back to preparing players for what awaits them after high school — physically, mentally and competitively.

“They’re gonna be ready. They’re gonna be ready, conditioned. They’re gonna be ready defensively and tough.”

For Workman, coaching them hard now is about making sure they’re equipped for an entirely different environment when the next opportunity arrives.

“Just preparing them for the college level, man, because it’s a different, different atmosphere.”

For Mansfield Timberview head coach Matt Workman, the identity he wants from the Wolves has little to do with how many shots fall. It starts with being the team nobody wants to line up against.

“We want to be the toughest team and outwork the person.”

Workman wants that reputation to follow Timberview everywhere — a group opponents know will make them earn everything from the moment the Wolves get off the bus.

“They don’t want to play us because not just because we’re talented, because we’re dogs and we’re tough.”

That mentality is already showing up behind closed doors. Workman has seen his players completely empty the tank during practices, diving on the floor, flying around and embracing everything the coaching staff asks of them.

“Their shirts and their practice gear is soaked, and we’re diving and we’re flying around.”

For Workman, toughness isn’t something Timberview can turn on once the season begins. It has to become an everyday standard.

“Stay tough every day in everything we do.”

For Mansfield Timberview head coach Matt Workman, simply making the postseason isn’t where the standard ends. The Wolves are part of a program that knows what competing on the biggest stage looks like — and Workman wants to lead them back there.

“We have been there to state five times.”

That history has created expectations inside Timberview that Workman believes are different from most programs. They’ve experienced deep postseason runs, understand what that level demands and aren’t afraid to set the bar accordingly.

“Our standards, I would probably say, [are] higher than most because we’ve been there, know what it takes.”

Workman experienced that stage as an assistant coach, but his next goal is personal: get Timberview back to the state championship as its head coach.

“I want to get to the state championship game, prove that I can do it myself, not just as an assistant.”

The expectations are high because the standard has already been established. Now Workman and the Wolves are working toward adding another chapter to that tradition.

“So we set them high. We’re trying to get there.”
