Inside @marcinrusak’s studio on the outskirts of Warsaw, the space is organised around processes that explore the preservation and decay of plants: a grow tent is filled with waste flowers drying beneath heat lamps, and a resin casting room houses experiments with biodegradable composites that resemble amber fossils.

Rusak’s work largely focuses on making furniture and objects out of flowers encased within synthetic resin. “The material lifespan of synthetic resin can be 1,000 years,” he says. “I don’t think everything should be preserved, so we try to give meaning to things that we will preserve and keep for future generations,” he adds, explaining how the studio weaves in plants and details relevant to each client’s personal history.

Despite achieving commercial success through the synthetic resin pieces, Rusak’s favourite objects are his perishable vases, where plant matter peeks through organic binders such as shellac and tree resin. “I really love that there are a few collectors who love the idea that the vase is not permanent and that they will have to part with it,” he says, describing how interest in these designs grew after the Covid-19 pandemic. “I think people discovered their own mortality.”

By repurposing flowers that are past their prime, creating designs that are often specific to their clients’ local environments, and embracing decay, Rusak’s work resists the cut flower industry’s focus on freshness, uniformity, and detachment from place. “Preservation and [degradation] were always hand in hand for me,” Rusak says.

Only two days left to experience Velvet Hour Lounge in person.
No photograph or video can quite capture the depth of the materials, the layers of texture, or the way the room transforms with the light.
The Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York closes tomorrow, October 13. One last chance to come experience it all for yourself.
Come linger a little longer and support an amazing charity for the kids of New York.

The quote below by Salvador Dalí was one of our muses for Kips Bay, The Secret Garden:

“I try to create fantastic things, magical things, things like in a dream. The world needs more fantasy. Our civilization is too mechanical. We can make the fantastic real, and then it is more real than that which actually exists.”

We invite you to visit our surreal garden where imagination, art, nature, and fantasy come together.

Now open to the public through October 13
80 W. Washington New York, NY 10011
