Call-out for rave tales ‼️ If you have journeyed through the clubs, raves and dancefloor as of the 1990s and early 2000s in Northern Ireland, your rave stories are needed for a new research project! Dr Maria A. Deiana, a senior lecturer at QUB who has previously studied the now classic documentary ‘Dancing on Narrow Ground’, is developing a new research project focused on dance music culture and youth at a time of impending change for NI. The project is also inspired by her own experiences of club culture and her ongoing research into art and creativity in facilitating peace. Once completed, the research will be shared in publications with the hope of contributing to ongoing efforts to document the significance of dance music culture for communities, wellbeing and peace. If you’d like to share some stories with her in a short interview, contact Dr Maria directly at m.deiana@qub.ac.uk 🪩🪩🪩

Respond to the latest government consultation on licensing 🚨 The Department for Communities is currently consulting on whether Northern Ireland’s licensing system supports market diversity and innovation. While some of the proposals being considered may help certain venues, they do not address many of the structural barriers facing music venues, nightclubs, cultural spaces, artists, promoters and audiences. Free The Night has submitted a response to the consultation, which you can use to help inform your own response. Broadly, we are calling for:
• A dedicated Cultural Venue Licence
• Reform of permitted alcohol hours
• Better alignment between liquor and entertainment licensing
• Reform of occasional licensing If you’ve experienced the impact of the current licensing system, your perspective is important— whether you’re a venue operator, artist, promoter, cultural worker or audience member. The consultation closes in six days, so please take some time over the next few days to respond. We’re sorry we haven’t been able to share this sooner, our workload both outside and within FTN has intensified recently and we’ve been struggling to keep up. We hope our response is helpful and makes it easier for people to take part in this consultation. Head to the link in our bio to read our blog post and full response to the consultation. #freethenight

Flying solo this weekend at @gettogetherfest in Sheffield. Been a while since I've played solo and am looking forward to seeing what it feels like again. Recently I have missed Belfast back when the local scene was one of the most exciting in Europe. I miss the buzz of playing in clubs and at dance music festivals, back when phones and social media hadn't become the focus of many kids' nights out. Back when people had spare cash to get drunk, dance, eat kebabs and be merry, without wondering if they'd have to eat beans for a week as a consequence of going out. It's certainly not all doom and gloom now, but the world felt like a happier place not that long ago and the club scene in Belfast was genuinely one of the best you could find, with a super sound community. Shout out @twitch_belfast 💙 Still, I feel very luck to get to continue to do what I love and to still be moving forward in this mental, at times exhausting industry lol Anyway, aye I'll be in Sheffield this weekend, making noise and being merry.
