One out of every three households in America owns a copy of Scrabble; it’s the second best-selling board game of all time, just behind Monopoly. The wordy pastime has some pretty notable fans: Barack Obama, Duke Ellington, Maya Angelou, Carol Burnett, even the legendary composer Igor Stravinsky and his wife, Vera (pictured). When photo-journalist Marvin Koner visited the Stravinsky's New York City apartment, he saw firsthand how thoroughly they enjoyed the game. As Time Magazine reported in 1957, "For relaxation Stravinsky plays... endless games of Scrabble (he uses a special Scrabble dictionary, which is not considered cricket by most Scrabble fans)." #NationalDictionaryDay #Stravinsky This fine art print and more are available for purchase at our Marvin Koner Archive Etsy shop. All proceeds benefit Family-to-Family, a nonprofit hunger relief organization. Don't forget to follow us for more vintage mid-century photographs and stories.
