TwoPine - Everywhere is Home Taylor File has always been a river guyโ€”recording by it, living beside it, letting it seep into the grain of his work. Now relocated from the Evansville stretch of the Ohio to the sludgy, runoff-streaked banks of the White River in Indianapolis, he faces a new challenge: pulling beauty from a murkier, more visibly degraded landscape. Those of us who have lived in Naptown know the tensionโ€”beauty and culture are there, but on a gray winter day, the city can turn even the most tender-hearted into Godโ€™s loneliest man. From the opening treated banjo plucks of Everywhere Is Home, Fileโ€™s TwoPine project offers a kind of hopeโ€”both elegiac and practicalโ€”against that backdrop. Thereโ€™s a touch of sonic micro-looting paired with gently arpeggiated ambience, lending the album a distinctly mid-aughts feel. You know the one: that folk-electronic portmanteau genre whose name we dare not speak. Thereโ€™s something refreshing about music from Indiana. Creation here feels unburdenedโ€”free from the curated ickiness of scene photos or sweaty territorial scrambles. Songs are created among half-unpacked boxes and the steady whirr of cicadas, with only the river as a collaborator. It is music not made for spectacle, but because it has to be. Cassette, available from Aural Canyon
