There’s a film crew following my wheel tracks for a short documentary, but this perspective is through my own lens, as I ramble on while pedaling along Hwy 101. The Journey hits differently when you’re out here.

Last Friday was a total blast, and we are still thinking about it.

Our 4th API Film Night welcomed 300+ guests to James Bridges Theater. What began four years ago as a small gathering has grown into a space for filmmakers, students, alumni, and community members to come together through cinema.

This year’s five shorts reminded us how alive and expansive API storytelling can be: documentary, drama, animation, puppetry, family histories, strange humor, hard questions, and moments that caught us off guard. In a loud and turbulent time, the theater gave us something rare: a room full of people watching, feeling, laughing, grieving, and imagining together.

Thank you to our filmmakers for trusting us with your stories, and to our moderator, team, partners, UCLA TFT, the Development Office, and everyone who helped bring this night to life. Most of all, thank you to everyone who showed up and stayed with us.

We hope these stories inspired you to keep telling your own. We cannot wait for what is still to come.

With gratitude,
Merry May & Fengyun

The last year has been full of changes, of ups & downs. • One undeniable *up* has been completing the first year of my film production MFA program at UCLA – returning to California, working with the fantastic classmates and faculty there, and writing and directing three short films. It hasn’t been without its random, awful challenges (incl the fact that my apartment roof caved in at one point??), but this last year, I finally found myself back at a mixing board and on set with my mixer after a pandemic-long hiatus, and I was able to push myself further – working with actors, working with cameras, with writing (and writing and writing and writing), collaborating with so many great people, and learning more and more about directing and filmmaking. All things which just a few years ago, I wouldn’t have dreamt I’d be doing. It’s wild to be here now. And I’m excited to take on what’s to come. 💫
