I have no memory of life before running and, with it, no idea how to move forward. Running has always been my thing, and now it’s gone. Nothing and no person has ever affected me in the way that this sport has. This sport has seen me in more ways than any person—sad, mad, happy, tired, energized, exhausted, weak, strong, losing, winning, alive, suffocating, depressed, anxious, bored, hyped, hopeful, hopeless, confident, insecure, focused, distracted, proud, humbled, disappointed, satisfied, brave, terrified, overwhelmed, broken, resilient, grateful, and more. No matter what, this sport has always been my lifeline. Waking up and realizing your only certainty is gone is a strange feeling. Does this mean retirement? Maybe. I hope not. But no team, no people, and no real training plan? I’ve never done that before. I don’t know how to run just to run. An entire 13½-year career came down to 4 minutes and 36 seconds, and just like that, it was over.
