POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

🎭 26.139 - The Unfriend - ★★★★ - They warned me Satan would be attractive

A maniacal comedy that out-sitcoms the classic sitcom, channelling the souls of golden-age British predecessors. There are explicit parallels to Mary Poppins, as garrulously American Elsa invades with a string of "otherness as teacher" lessons for a strait-laced British family and their curtain-twitching neighbours. The writing really leans into the brief, pushing boundaries towards (actual) toilet humour.

👥 The cast capture the classic tension between clashing personalities trying to keep up appearances. However, the stereotypes often breach into caricature territory, threatening to derail the nuance of the story.

🎨 Okay, so I gasped at the gorgeously realistic set, but I wasn't alone; the visual payoff is immediate. It epitomises the 'family of four' terrace you would expect in London, highlighting the twee politeness that painstakingly avoids confrontation. The 'opening credits' video overlay took the sitcom energy to a new level; something I've never seen before.

🎯 A black comedy mystery told in an outrageously farcical sitcom style. Some of the humour might belong in the past, but you can excuse a lot when a show looks this good. Low-brow laughs with 4-ply luxury.

We’ve all met someone on holiday who seemed like a good idea at the time - until they turn up at your house.

In STC’s The Unfriend, a promise to stay in touch becomes a brilliantly awkward visit, and a very funny live sitcom. The digital opening credits set the tone; the ordered suburban home gives the chaos somewhere to land; and the cast absolutely nails the comic rhythm. Tim Walter’s painfully polite husband is a terrific foil for Helen Thomson’s gloriously brash Elsa, with Alex Lee, Ty Arnott and Brooklyn Davis adding beautifully observed family exasperation.

The dark, literal toilet humour is impeccably controlled: crude enough to make you wince, precise enough to keep you laughing. Underneath the nonsense are sharper questions: How polite is too polite? And how much can we trust what we read online over our own lived experience?

Long blackouts and an almost unnecessary interval interrupt the momentum a little, especially when the momentum of the absurdity could easily carry a straight run through, but ultimately, the Unfriend is a hilarious night of absurd dark comedy.

I left was dying with laughter - or perhaps it was the sandwiches at the after-party. I see what you did there, STC.
