Going home gave me the chance to finally make the Otherwise video how I envisioned it: going to the river with my buddies, showcasing my beautiful home. We did it between recording sessions at the mercantile. You can watch it right here or on my linked YouTube. Enjoy the end of summer, everyone!

DAY TWO recording an album at the hundred-year-old @thetoddmercantile it’s going awesome and we’re having a great time. I’m not normally a vlogger type guy, but I thought it would be fun to share some of this process.

Back in January, Tyler and I saddled up in my trusty crosstrek and made the 13-hour drive up I-81 to Connecticut, a pilgrimage that became so dear to me during my time in college. Along with Rory and Nat, we stayed in Ben’s senior house while his roommates were away for winter break.

After just a day of rehearsals, The No-Hellers went into @dirt_floor_record_production for two days of recording. In that time, we recorded the ENTIRE album you now hear (with the exception of fiddle parts). Every song was done fully-live, with us all recording in different rooms of the cabin.

I had the time of my life. There are few periods that I think I’ve ever been happier than that short stretch of days. You can best hear this joy on the final song on the album, WWYDWSLY, when we all go around and around on the refrain just for the fun of it. This was at times a serious album, but it’s infused with the rare magic of realizing a dream.

Please enjoy these clips of a wonderful memory. I hope they help bring the music to life in your mind. You can listen to the album at the link in my bio, or I’ll sell you a CD sometime.

For a decade now I’ve wanted to make an album. It’s been my most enduring dream. He couldn’t see ten years in the future, but that kid I once was never stopped trying, and I’m tremendously proud of him for seeing his vision through. There are times in life that it feels everything has led to, and that’s what this is for me.

Thank you to Nat, Rory, Ben, and Tyler for being the nucleus of this album (and sometimes my life lol). Thank you to Trevor, Grayson, and Mac for burning it down on the fiddle at a moment’s notice. Thank you to Eric and Eli at Dirt Floor Recording for stoking the fire and being such excellent engineers (and for skeptically believing me when I insisted we could record the whole project in two days). And thank you to Jesse and Holly for making all the photos that put a visual to this important moment in time. None of this happens without any one of these people.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, all these relationships are even more precious to me, as is the ability to make music in the face of all life’s troubles. I find comfort and safety in my community, and I’m glad to share this piece of myself with them. This place and these people mean more than can be put into words.
