Here’s to another awesome New Years Polar Plunge! I’ve been doing this since 2016 and one thing I’ve really come to understand since the first plunge has been that the water isn’t as cold as my mind initially built it up to be. Although chilly no doubt, it’s bearable. So often fear can stops us from accomplishing our goals, especially if we hesitate, even when the fear is irrational. The trick is to push through that fear anyways and know that glory is on the other side. Going into 2026, I encourage you to push through those fears and not let them stop you from reaching your goals. Happy New Year! 🙌🏼🎊

Congrats to the competitors at ADCC Nationals in Las Vegas today. I'm proud of all you testing yourself against the best. We had wins, losses, and multiple 4th place finishes. But for me, when the refs take the time to complement my students, that really makes me happy.

Some Goals were accomplished yesterday.
Strategic wins for both Sloan and Graysen in every single match, in each of their divisions, resulting in not only all gold medals but also the prized black medals which are only awarded to those who win Everything. All. Day.

🖤 He had no idea.
One minute he was rolling like it was just another Saturday…
The next, @eganinoue — jiu jitsu legend and world champion — walked through the door.

Coach Owen has spent years building @rollingwatersbjj into something more than just a gym. It’s a home for people across Lake County — a place where kids gain confidence, adults find strength, and the community comes together.

This weekend, his students gave something back.

We secretly flew in Egan from Hawaii to surprise Coach with his TWO STRIPES on his black belt — a major milestone that marks not just skill, but dedication, leadership, and impact.

His reaction? Pure shock, raw emotion, and a gym full of love. 🥹

After the surprise, Egan taught a 2-hour seminar in the gi (traditional martial arts uniform), followed by a community BBQ catered by the delicious @406_bbq to celebrate.

This was more than a belt promotion.
It was a thank-you to a coach who continues to pour everything into his students and the people of this valley.

Congratulations, Coach Owen.
You’ve more than earned it. 🤙

3 months ago my best friend calls & says that she wants to find a way to get Our Coach Owen’s Sensei @eganinoue up to Montana to give Owen promotional stripe on his Black Belt.
After being unsuccessful in contacting him she said “ idk maybe you can get ahold of him”.
I got on the phone and tried to call, no answer. I kept trying, & I probably hit redial 5-7 times.. on the last call he finally answered, Hi! (If only he knew what he was getting into😂 ) I presented @tyeh1’s genius idea to him and asked him if this was something he would do? Are we overstepping boundaries in jiu jitsu culture? Is this okay? 😂
Egan’s voice immediately lit up and I could hear how much he admired and respected Owen as his student. This relationship reminded me of the way our Coach Owen holds his students under his wing and it immediately made me feel at ease.

Although Egan is a busy man with a full life, between teaching his classes, seminars, having his own kids in travel baseball, orchestra and the arts, he made it a point and took the time (even canceling an event) to travel over 3,000 miles to surprise and honor his long time student of 18 years with 2 well earned and much deserved stripes on his belt.

Upon Egan’s arrival I understood better why having a great teacher is important, but I now realize it’s like choosing your family because these connections are lifelong.
Although Owen and Egan hadn’t seen each other in 6 years to see our Coach instantly appear as a student the moment he heard his Coaches voice was an honor to witness.

This is a great representation of jiu jitsu culture, the belts and the stripes, are not just an accessory of vanity, they are a symbol of multilayered experiences, a life of education and knowledge weaved in to tape and belts as are the relationships, respect, reflection, humility and time. They are a symbol of forever being a student, even as a master Black belt.
Jiu Jitsu is a sport but it is also a philosophy, a culture a family and a way of life.

Today I am thankful for this Community and the enrichment it brings to our lives.
Thank You @rollingwatersbjj and Thank You @eganinoue witnessing this weekend was quite the privilege.

I flew into Missoula, Montana yesterday to surprise one of my black belts, Owen Garcia, for the 3-year anniversary of Waters Jiu-Jitsu and his 6th year as a black belt.
He didn’t know I was coming. His students set it up months ago—and his reaction was worth every mile.

I taught a seminar and got to meet his crew… and let me tell you, it felt like family.

The vibe of a gym always starts from the top.
And the qualities that build a powerful community?
Integrity.
Work ethic.
Humility.
Giving credit to those who helped you get there.
And never forgetting where you came from.

It’s not about packing the gym with numbers. It’s about building a place where people want to grow together—on and off the mats.

Proud of you, Owen. You’re doing it right.

He had no idea I was coming…
This year makes three years since Owen opened his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school — and six years as a black belt. That makes him a two-stripe black belt and a true leader in the art.

What he didn’t know? His students reached out three months ago to plan this surprise.
I flew overnight to Seattle, sprinted through terminals, jumped subways, caught a flight to Missoula…
Then it was a one-hour car ride, 15-minute shower, and straight to Rolling Waters Jiu-Jitsu — just in time to catch him rolling and see his face when he spotted me.

Every mile was worth it.
To see one of my black belts thriving, leading, and still growing — that’s the reward.
We ended the night the right way… with good friends and some amazing barbecue brisket.

Proud of you, Owen. Keep building something special.
