As we progress through Melanated March I present to you Flowers in Bloom. A project I am so grateful to have been apart of by @thepalette.society

Purpose: To reframe Black History Month. This photoshoot exists to honor Black
history as a living continuum— rooted in past, growing in the present, and
continuously blooming into the future.

History Lesson!

Black History Month was never meant to be the only time Black history is acknowledged.

It first began as Negro History Week in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who believed Black contributions were being erased from mainstream history and they were.
The intention was:
- To integrate Black history into American history
- To encourage schools and communities to study Black achievements YEAR-ROUND
- To correct narratives that portrayed Black people only through oppression rather than innovation, culture, and leadership.

By 1976 almost 50 years later it expanded into what we now call Black History Month recognized nationally during the U.S. Bicentennial.

But the Black identity not as a static past but an evolving cultural force. Not to be contained within the shortest month of the year. The past doesn’t sit behind us, it moves through us.

We are a lineage that refuses to fade with the future blooming through us. Every Month of Every Year in Every Lifetime 🤎✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽

MOLT is a visual expression of the ideal polished look and control in editorial imagery by embracing distortion and mess. Molt showcases transformation as loud, messy, sometimes cold, and unapologetically public; capturing the space between shedding skin and becoming one’s new self.
