The Kalamazoo Growlers proudly watched nine former players join major league organizations in the last week, continuing the major league tradition held by the team.

The four 2026 draft picks elevate Kalamazoo’s franchise total to 76 overall players drafted, dating back to just 2014.

“We’re very proud of the major league standard held in Kalamazoo,” team owner Brian Colopy said. “I am very grateful for all the coaches, players and front office staff who work tirelessly to uphold that effort in this city.”

The success didn’t stop in the draft. The Growlers also watched five former players sign undrafted free agent deals.

“I’d like to personally congratulate every one of these MLB signees and their families for this milestone,” Colopy said. “Just to put a pen to paper takes decades of hard work from parents, coaches and the player themselves and is an incredible display of hard work.”

TWO MORE FORMER GROWLERS ARE OFF THE BOARD🐻‼️

Tyler Kapa played in nine games for Kalamazoo in 2024, throwing 10.0 innings and held an astonishing 0.90 ERA while striking out 16. The right-hander shined at Virginia this past spring, holding a 2.70 ERA in 25 appearances out of the bullpen, earning 11 saves.

Connor Shouse played for the Growlers in 2025, playing in nine games with a 1.056 OPS. Shouse's Kalamazoo highlight came against Royal Oak hitting two home runs, fueling the Growlers to the win.

Congrats to both Tyler and Connor, we will be rooting for you in Kalamazoo!

2026 MLB DRAFT RECAP ⚾️

Virginia had a strong showing in the 2026 MLB Draft, with FIVE Cavaliers selected over the two-day event!

- AJ Gracia (Round 1, Pick 9) ➡️ Braves
- Eric Becker (Round 2, Pick 58) ➡️ Reds
- Kyle Johnson (Round 6, Pick 174) ➡️ Rays
- Joe Tiroly (Round 7, Pick 214) ➡️ Padres
- Tyler Kapa (Round 14, Pick 415) ➡️ Marlins

The Hoos have now produced 30 MLB Draft picks since the start of the 2021 season, the third most in the ACC during that span.

Virginia also came away with an excellent result on the recruiting front. Only one member of the Hoos’ 11th ranked 2026 signing class, first-round pick Bo Lowrance, was selected, meaning the rest of the class is expected to arrive in Charlottesville.
