Ever wonder why cows are branded? It’s a critical ranching practice providing identification and ownership that dates back to ancient times. Why does that matter? In 2023, the US suffered $12.05 million worth of livestock theft. Branding our cows helps to track and prove ownership and also deters theft. It’s one way we are able to track and monitor our animals to help ensure integrity in our industry. Some ask, why still brand with all of our modern technologies? We do have additional tracking methods; however the brand cannot be removed or changed like other forms of ID so it really does help us maintain our herd.

#NationalAgricultureDay Today we thank all our farmers and ranchers and truckers and processors and milkers and growers and harvesters and counters and irrigators and packers and mechanics and cowboys and nutritionists and veterinarians and feeders and managers and pickers and agronomists and biologists and everyone in between that are apart of Agriculture. We also thank those who came before us and taught us all we know and helped paved the way for how we grow food today!

One thing you can’t call these cowboys is lazy. On the Ranch and on the farm, we simply can’t afford to be “lazy” or to let things slide by. There is too much relying on us getting the job done and doing it right. But the best part about it, is that our kids get to see and be apart of this hard work. It builds character and gratitude for what we have. What do you think? Is hard work good for kids?
