I’m not a huge “drills” guy. I believe the best way to become a better pole vaulter is to pole vault. Full jumps, with speed, putting the whole movement together.

But early in the season, there’s value in getting on tiny poles, short run, and isolating the specific pieces of the jump to build the movement patterns before bringing it all together.

Straight pole: tall takeoff, applying pressure up through the top arm, moving the pole to vertical as fast as possible
Bendy plant: now applying pressure up through both arms to hold the hips back, elongating the press
Flyaway: timing the swing with the bending and unbending of the pole, finding a stable, balanced position on the invert
Rollie: dynamic, explosive invert that flows directly into the turn while staying connected and aligned with the pole as it unbends #

The goal isn’t to be really good at drills… to build the movement patterns that will transfer to a full vault. I want my athletes leaving every session having accomplished our one or two goals for the day without taking so many reps that their last couple are unproductive. Most importantly, I want them hungry for the next jump day.

Never really thought I’d be in this position, but I’m closing the door on my pole vault career.

To truly love something is to give everything you have to it (even your hair), and I can say without a doubt I gave it all. This sport has humbled me more than anything else ever has; it’s shown me what it actually feels like to work through constant failure, and to keep showing up anyway. I owe so much of who I am to the people who stuck it out with me through that, especially coaches and teammates who saw something in me on days I couldn’t see it myself.

There’s no version of me that exists without this sport. It has given me lifelong friends and mentors. It has broken me down and built me back up more times than I can count, but somehow I’ve loved it more every time. Grateful doesn’t even cover it. Thanks for taking a chance on me, @duketfxc . Thank you, pole vault. Time to go corporate.
