For years, I thought food was something I had to earn.

Every “bad” meal came with guilt. Every indulgence felt like something that needed to be punished with extra cardio, longer workouts, or stricter rules.

I wasn’t training because I loved my body.
I was training because I was trying to change it.

Now, my relationship with food and exercise looks completely different. Training for my first half has also helped shift my perspective on fueling to perform and recover.

I eat to fuel my runs.
I eat to recover from hard workouts.
I eat to build strength.
I eat because my body deserves nourishment, not punishment.

The goal is to perform, recover, and live fully.

It’s taken years of unlearning, but I’m finally grateful for what my body can do instead of constantly criticizing how it looks.

Performance over punishment. Fuel over fear. 💜

Over the last 4+ years of building The Yard, my only real regrets are on how I’ve managed my emotions, versus any specific decisions I’ve made.

Sure, there have been times where I’ve made poor choices. But most, if not all of those mistakes have been resolved with time and intention. These times would have been much easier to manage had I focused on controlling what I could and trusting that everything else will work itself out.

Instead, I’ve had a tendency to anticipate worst case scenarios and agonize over hypothetical outcomes that never came to fruition. Clearly not a rational or productive approach.

Back in 2024, I wrote something that I still come back to often: “Things are never as good or as bad as they seem.” My offensive coordinator in college used to say this after reviewing game film. That lesson has proven true in many areas of life, especially entrepreneurship. There have been plenty of months where revenue looked like it was trending in the wrong direction. By the end of the month, whether we hit our goals or not, I usually feel the same: wanting more. If we hit our targets, I’m thinking about how we sustain the momentum. If we miss, I’m thinking about how we fix it.

Here I am, over two years later, beating the same drum. Not because I’ve mastered the lesson, but because it’s one that requires constant practice. The goal isn’t to eliminate the emotional swings of entrepreneurship. It’s to recognize them faster, reset quicker, and get back to the work that actually matters.

At The Yard Strength Training, our mission is simple:
We are reinventing the gym experience to be the most efficient ever, all while empowering our Community to reach their fitness and business goals.

For our Members and Personal Training Clients, my direct impact on their fitness results is actually pretty limited. The best thing I can do is create an environment where success is easy — through efficient systems, great facilities, and well-trained staff.

But for our Trainers, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with many of them to encourage, support, and help grow their businesses (s/o @progression_health!) ... That’s where I get the most satisfaction. Maybe that’s because when I started my journey with The Yard, I wish I had a similar support system.

Sure, the Membership market is bigger, and if our Trainers were traditional in-house employees we could probably make 3–4× higher margins.

But we’ve found that maintaining an Independent Trainer model — even for clients we bring in — creates a stronger community and better long-term retention. And in the long run, that’s the model we believe in.

A big turning point for me was realizing that The Yard doesn’t depend on me in the way I once thought. In many cases, it actually runs better when I don’t step in.

I’ve always defined myself by working long hours, being available at all times, and responding immediately to whatever came up. That mindset mattered, and it helped get the business to where it is today. But after more than four years, I’ve come to accept something simple and humbling: the to-do list never ends. It’s there every morning, no matter what I did the day before.

Once I really internalized that, my relationship with urgency started to change. Not everything needs a late-night response or a weekend fix. More often than not, giving myself space—sleeping on it, thinking it through, or handing it off—leads to a better decision and a better outcome, for the business and for me.

s/o to @tyleryasuda for helping me to get there.
