As a self-confessed type geek and designer, I’ve always appreciated the typewriter—not just for the letters it put on a page, but for the machine itself.

The gears, levers, elbows and mechanics are beautifully primitive. Every keystroke is physical. Every letter requires something to move. In black and white, especially with high contrast, those shapes and shadows become almost architectural, geometry hiding inside a machine built for communication.

I remember passing a typewriter repair shop around 2009 and thinking I might be this guy’s biggest fan—and yet I’d probably never have anything repaired. I wanted his wonderfully specific little business to somehow survive, even as the world had clearly moved on.

I have a couple of typewriters in my own home now. Ironically, they don’t communicate much anymore. They’re there because they’re beautiful.

Apparently a typewriter is just an old computer now.
Fair enough. 😅

¡DAG! — stopped in at my favorite Philly typewriter shop and… looks like … they … have … a bit more stock to inventory. ALSO: picked up an @ibm Selectric typeball called HEADLINE that may transform my little life. @passyunkavenue @trophybikes @littleyentabooks @mollysbooksandrecords @levirtuphila

“women of a certain age” is a fully loaded phrase that can encompass so much in history. And with the death of Gloria Steinem, I’ve been thinking a lot more about women’s paths, both professional and personal, and whether people can chew on that regret over missed opportunities (if any) and turn it into something else. I think unless you’ve been through it, you can’t know.

In any case, I appreciate the stories and the chance to think about things. Obituaries can’t tell every detail, but I love it when I know more. We all contain multitudes!

Respect to the champion #maxxinista who keeps going, even mowing down other shoppers from a wheelchair. :)

Thanks to @bogarrity for sharing the iconic MA with us. As always, the full obit is at the link in bio.

Unknown woman, c. 1940s–early 1950. I have a pile of photos to sort through, and part of the job is knowing what has “it.” And this one has just that. A photo that tells the most story is the best one to go with, even when we don’t have all the context. Not many random candid photos can do that. If I were a photo editor of a publication (I have some background here), this would be one I’d set aside.

A young woman perched on the edge of a desk, saddle shoes crossed at the ankles, surrounded by stacks of papers and a typewriter while someone works behind her.

Judging by the clothing, hairstyle, office equipment and those unmistakable saddle shoes, this appears to date to roughly the 1940s, possibly into the early 1950s. The room looks less like a polished corporate office and more like a busy records, newspaper, school or administrative workspace. Paper everywhere and work clearly underway. And yet somebody stopped long enough to take her picture.

There’s little point in having a) typewriters and b) books if you’re not gonna create a library card catalog for your collection. Using the old Dewey Decimal system I created the first card catalog for the most important book in my library.
