Wondering how long our #powderskiing season lasts? We usually get a solid snowpack by mid-November and welcome our first groups in the last week of November. Snow falls often until early January, then becomes less frequent but heavier—sometimes we get over a meter in one go. It keeps snowing into spring, but our last trips are usually in the second or third week of March. Conditions up high stay great, though getting around in the valley can be a bit tougher. All in all, we enjoy 15 to 16 weeks of skiing each year, which is pretty good!

Here are some pictures showing different parts of the season, from November to March; throughout the season, you can count on the same kind of snow: cold-smoked powder!

Mid-December

Also January

Still January

Mid-February

End of February and mind-blowing weather and snow conditions

Also end of February

Powderdays like this are not rare in February

You won't believe it, but this is mid-March!

Had so much fun chatting with @rei’s @shelbystanger for their Wild Ideas Worth Living podcast! Have a listen and let me know if you have follow up questions. My double 7 project was a personal journey that took me all over the world. That is the prize. The people I met, and the places I got to visit. Honored to have Shelby take interest in my story and happy to share with you all! Link in bio if find the Wild Ideas Worth Living podcast wherever you listen to your Pod’s

Mountain running…the running part is out of character for me. This clip is from yesterday – a long mission to visit two peaks I’ve had on my mind for some time.

Father’s Day adventure chasing @samuel_naney on a classic local mountaineering objective and taking as many notes as possible.

Finding puffy jacket temperatures. Summit & swim on a mountain we see from our house.

Morning shadows in the subalpine yesterday 10-ish miles in.

Snow cruising on a popular North Cascades ski run.

Dropping elevation quickly. Appeals to my skier sensibilities.

Sam topping out.

Dads getting high.

Jungle foliage.

Cool summit shale.

Looking back at the first summit of the day from the second.

Stats from yesterday’s mission. Thanks to @melissaarnot for teaching me the ways. My longest running adventure since she made me run a 50k with her 10 years ago. And thanks to @rikjammusic for the soundtrack.

After his Alaska season, Norrøna ambassador Tyler Reid travelled to Norway to explore Arctic ski terrain by boat - surrounded by steep mountains, cold seas and ever-changing weather.

For more than a decade, Tyler has guided this same group of skiers, building friendships shaped by shared experiences in remote places. Together, they have ski toured in Greenland, Siberia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Canada, and Alaska. But this was their first trip to Norway. 🇳🇴

Rarely in the mountains without a camera, Tyler is just as drawn to the motion of nature as he is to the skiing itself. Snow drifting through the air, water carving its way through the landscape and trees moving with the wind all become part of the story.

Welcome to nature ❄️🌿

10 years ago today with @melissaarnot. After a three-hour rest stop at the 8300m high camp we started walking by headlamp. Calm winds. Stars above. 12.5 hours later we were on the summit, her without an oxygen mask.

We’d only been together a few months when one day on the Washington coast she asked me if I would be her climbing partner on Everest that spring. Just the two of us. Her attempting a goal she’d been working towards for 7 years. Me as her support team and photographer.

I didn’t feel worthy of this opportunity - I’d never been to the Himalayas before and I had zero experience above 7000m. I had put in a lot of years in the trenches of Mt. Rainier and dabbled in some expedition guiding early in my career, but ski guiding was always my focus. Low altitude ski guiding. This was her realm.

We moved to a snowy cabin in the mountains of Idaho and I trained harder than I ever had in my life. It was intimidating and I wanted to be a solid partner. I even got into running.

Being on the north side, just the two of us, with no one to answer to was surreal. I forgot we were on Everest. It just felt like a vision quest through spiritually charged terrain, fueled by love and possibility.

Watching her succeed was beautiful beyond words. I had a feeling she would. I was also probably riding the oxygen deprivation high that makes everything feel warm and fuzzy, but that’s how I remember it. The variables were in alignment, the rubber bands were off, and I had a front row seat.

The rest of our mystical journey is detailed in ENOUGH by Melissa Arnot Reid. The paperback version was just released last week. Read it if you haven’t already.

Melissa won’t see this for a bit…she’s on another mountain right now.
