As campaigns chase every possible vote, Michael Bland of Black Men Vote argues that winning over Black men is less about messaging and more about showing up. His advice to politicians is blunt: stop treating outreach like a last-call scramble and start building relationships long before Election Day. The voters many campaigns overlook, he suggests, are not asking for special treatment, just the same time, attention, and respect routinely given to everyone else.

Michael Bland of Black Men Vote says the rise in Black men identifying as independents is less about rejecting parties and more about rejecting political boxes. He argues many voters want the freedom to blend conservative and liberal views, judge candidates on results instead of ideology, and support whoever best reflects their priorities around family, finances, and community. In his telling, independence is not a movement toward the middle so much as a demand to think beyond the usual partisan playbook.

For too long, Black men have been talked about in American politics instead of being listened to.

That has to change.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with #Rooted to talk about why Black men remain some of the most misunderstood voters in America, and what our work at Black Men Vote is revealing about who we are, what we care about, and what we expect from our democracy.

Black men are not a monolith. We are not a single voting bloc. And we cannot be reduced to assumptions about party loyalty, ideology, or turnout.

Our research tells a much more nuanced story one shaped by economic opportunity, the rising cost of living, healthcare, representation, political independence, and a desire to see government deliver real results in our communities.

The question isn’t whether Black men will participate.

The question is whether political leaders, campaigns, institutions, and organizations are willing to listen differently.

As we look toward the 2026 midterms and beyond, I believe there is an opportunity to build a new kind of political engagement one that treats Black men not simply as voters to mobilize, but as partners in shaping the future of our democracy.

This conversation is just the beginning.

Thank you to the Rooted team for creating the space for an honest and necessary conversation.

Michael Bland of Black Men Vote ( @blackmenvoteofficial ) says many Black voters are growing less interested in partisan loyalty and more focused on who can deliver meaningful change. With patience for political gridlock wearing thin, he argues that communities are looking for leaders willing to act with urgency on issues that affect everyday life.
