I’m a firm believer in the importance of visiting wineries and connecting people, place and purpose in order to truly understand a wine. Therefore I was delighted to finally visit @isoleolena, one of my favourite Chiantis, sat on the top of a hilled valley at the edge of the appellation and with a fantastic view out towards San Gimignano.

Thanks to Edoardo for the fantastic visit and tasting, which included the Chianti Classico 2023, the Syrah 2021 (I’m starting to really get into my Tuscan Syrahs, which you should definitely try if you haven’t yet…), the rare 2016 Gran Selezione (personal favourite) and the 2021 Cepparello (too young to appreciate at this stage).
I look forward to returning to visit their new winery and cellar, currently under construction.

The great thing about eating in Chianti is that the restaurants serve loads of local wines at a very small markup, which is fantastic when you want to end the day enjoying a bottle from the winery you have just been to with a delicious traditional meal without feeling ripped off. The fact that this isn’t the case for most of Bordeaux is just bewildering.

Our perfect evening meal was at @anticatrattorialatoppa in the heart of neighbouring San Donato with my Tuscan go-to pasta dish Pappardelle all’anatra (duck ragu) 😋

At such great value, we even grabbed another bottle of Isole e Olena with our last meal in Florence at the absolutely incredible @atelierdenerli (and with another ragu). As they say in French, ‘on ne change pas une équipe qui gagne!’ Perhaps there’s an Italian equivalent?

Unplugged and entirely at ease. Between the pages of a good book, the mind slows and the day softens. In the quiet turning of pages, the mind is free to wander.

The beautifully wild, and wildly beautiful Île de Porquerolles. A truly special and unique place. As you can tell I was particularly fascinated by the trees!

BORDEAUX 2025 EN PRIMEURS - A NEW GENERATION OF WINES

‘En Primeurs’ week has been one of the biggest highlights of the tasting calendar for me since I tasted the Bordeaux 2013 vintage en primeurs. And despite my week being cut short, with the sun in full shine and hopeful smiles beaming off people’s faces, this primeurs campaign will be particularly memorable.

With the 2025, Bordeaux has successfully created a new generation of wines across the whole region.

Whereas for the 2024 vintage, only around half managed to align choices in the vineyard (predominantly harvest picking dates) with those in the winery (generally gentler extraction), it appears that conditions seemed to favour the whole region for the 2025, and those who have been making true progress in the winery over a number of years being able to harness these conditions to create truly stand-out wines.

Across the world winemakers claim they make ‘fresh’ wines right now, without really being able to describe what that means for their wine. However for Bordeaux generally, this meant ‘fresh’ in the sense that the wines exhibited less perceivable tannin without losing body and structure, or feeling fragile (the case with many 2024s). Therefore wines that have a smoother, more seductive texture and also already offering lighter, more delicate, charming aromas that would have been masked by the darker, heavier and more bitter tannic aromas of the past. Substance gives way to Style (in a good way), where the top wines each have a more recognisable identity than ever before. All of the above resulting in wines that can be appreciated much earlier, yet with the acidity that enables them to still be aged as before. Those that missed the mark for me were those whose wines gave an acidity that you could taste (sour, and even in cases a slight bergamote bitterness) rather than feel.

Yet, as many before me have already commented, the future of Bordeaux and its ‘en primeurs’ is no longer dictated by the quality of its wines but instead about price-quality ratio, which remains to be seen. Stay tuned!
