For more than 50 years, Canfield has served his community through his work in law, government and international service. He has served as Fort Smith City Attorney since 1974 and has made 58 international trips, including work supporting clean water, sanitation and health education in Laos.

His decades of service have earned him numerous honors, including the Arkansas Bar Association’s inaugural Outstanding Government Attorney Award.

We’re proud to celebrate a Razorback whose impact reaches far beyond the courtroom.

Today a few of our attorneys went back to the place it all started for each attorney in our office, @uarklaw. They spent the afternoon interviewing law students for clerkships next Summer, and even found some time to go visit Dean Jim Miller, who has made a tremendous impact on the legal community and lawyers coming though the law school the last 50 years!

The case that changed my career wasn’t the biggest one.

It was the first one that showed me what people really needed.

When I first started practicing law, I wasn’t trying to build one of Arkansas’s largest personal injury firms. I was simply trying to build a career and provide for my family.

Then, in the early 1990s, a woman walked into my office after being injured in a car accident. She carried a stack of solicitation letters from lawyers asking for her case.

Instead, she asked me to represent her.

As I worked with her, I realized something that has stayed with me ever since: most people don’t understand their legal rights. They’re dealing with pain, medical bills, insurance companies, and uncertainty all at once. More than anything, they need someone they can trust to stand beside them.

That experience changed the direction of my career.

In 1994, I founded Taylor King Law in a small two-room office in downtown Arkadelphia. We didn’t start with a large staff or a grand business plan. We focused on helping injured people and treating every client the right way.

One client became another, and over time that small office grew into a firm serving communities across Arkansas with more than 20 attorneys and over 50 professional staff members.

But what I’m most proud of isn’t how much we’ve grown.

It’s that we’ve never lost sight of why we started.

I still enjoy sitting across from clients, hearing their stories, explaining the law in a way that makes sense, and helping people through some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Today, it’s especially meaningful to have my children, Austin and Maggie, working alongside me as we continue serving the communities we’ve always called home.

“On Your Side, By Your Side” isn’t just our slogan.

It’s the promise we’ve made to every client who walks through our doors.
