I used to live in Parksville for two years, but never made it up to this northern gem—and had no idea what lay beneath the waters of Vancouver Island. A decade later, I came back a little older, this time with dive gear, and finally got to see.

God’s Pocket Marine Park, near Port Hardy, left us in awe. World-class cold-water diving, with walls covered in white and pink anemones, yellow and orange sponges, and soft corals. From the tiniest macro details to the marine life around us, there was so much to take in. I couldn’t feel more fortunate to have experienced it.

A huge shout-out to @ubdiving / Port Hardy Diving, and especially Captain Sean. Thank you for putting so much thought and care into looking after us. Even with the unpredictable weather of mid-October, you explored every possible option to get us out safely, show us as much as conditions allowed, and make every day an adventure. We felt incredibly well cared for—and very lucky.

Of course, we left with a few wishes for next time: a curious sea lion coming to say hello underwater, and a chance to see—and hopefully photograph—a giant Pacific octopus. A few more reasons to return. 🦭🐙

Coming back to an island I already loved and discovering an entirely new world beneath it will stay with me. You never know what the next dive will bring, but I have a very strong feeling this won’t be our last visit.

Until next time, God’s Pocket. More underwater moments to come. #scubadiving #porthardy #porthardydiving #ubdiving

iDrop into the kelp forest, where comb jellies flicker with rainbows as the sunlight catches them just right. Little spaceships drifting through an underwater world. 🌈🪼#gonorthisland #jellyfish #divebc #visitporthardy

Why travel all the way to dive the top of Vancouver Island?

Because it is one of the best cold water dive locations in the world. Throughout these nutrient rich channels life is in abundance. Cascading walls covered in corals, anemones and sponges. Home to diverse species of rockfish, sculpins, crustaceans and nudibranch - and if you’re lucky wolfeels, octopus and even mola molas!!

If you haven’t had the chance to experience these magical waters yet… Do It!! Book the trip!! It’ll be well worth the money.

Cruising Through the Kelp

Kelp forests are some of my favourite places to dive. They are almost magical in my eyes. Life is everywhere you look. Anemones and juvenile rockfish thrive in these underwater forests. I could spend all day just watching the kelp blades ripple in the currents.

It's Rock Greenling season!

In the fall months colorful male Rock Greenling grace us with their presence in the shallows. Guarding egg masses in area's of high current and swell, it's quite the task to observe and film these vibrant fish.

Although I have seen these fish once or twice in other areas, Port Hardy is where I have had the most luck!

Drifting through the kelp

This was easily the largest moon jellyfish I’ve ever seen. At the size of a beach ball this jelly was drifting through the kelp in the endless search for food.

Nakwakto Rapids has some of the strongest tidal currents on Earth—and yes, we dive here. But only a few days each year and those spots fill fast. Not many can say they have had the opportunity and even fewer have done the dive. Wooohooo

What can you spot? Tell us in the comments!

I filmed this with my naked iPhone—no case—from the diver elevator on Good Vibrations at one of the dive sites we visit. When I spot something cool, I grab my phone and film it!

We call these little clips “iDrops”—a little eye candy from below the surface.

I share these encounters all the time. Thanks for following along and helping identify these awesome critters.
