Who actually owns the banks that hold and move much of the Caribbean’s money? The answer is far more complex than a list of wealthy individuals. Across some of the region’s largest banking institutions, ownership stretches from Caribbean governments and prominent business families to multinational banking groups, institutional investors and tens of thousands of public shareholders. The Dominican Republic directly owns Banreservas. The Government of Trinidad & Tobago controls First Citizens, while two state-linked institutions are the largest disclosed shareholders in Republic Financial Holdings. In Jamaica, Michael Lee-Chin ultimately controls almost 50% of NCB Financial Group through Portland Holdings and AIC (Barbados). In the Dominican Republic, the strongest available evidence points to the Pimentel family behind Banco Santa Cruz. Elsewhere, the ownership becomes considerably more dispersed. Popular Inc., First BanCorp and OFG Bancorp are publicly traded companies without a single controlling individual or family. RBC Financial Caribbean ultimately sits within Royal Bank of Canada, while several Scotiabank operations across the region trace back to the publicly owned Bank of Nova Scotia in Canada. CIBC currently owns 91.7% of CIBC Caribbean, although Butterfield has agreed to acquire that interest in a transaction expected to close in the first half of 2027. The deeper story is not simply who owns a bank. It is how Caribbean financial power is distributed between governments, families, institutions, foreign banking groups and public capital markets. Understanding who owns the institutions that finance an economy is one of the clearest ways to understand where economic power ultimately sits.

AYITI — A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE🇭🇹 Imagine an AYITI where all 10 departments are strong enough to function independently, yet connected as one nation. Each department would have the essential infrastructure its people need: a 10,000-seat football stadium, modern hospital, police and fire services, courthouse, schools and vocational centers, public library, parks, UNIBANK, shopping center and mall with theater, government and majistra offices, train and bus station, public markets, emergency services, modern roads, bridges, toll infrastructure, clean water, sanitation, waste management, reliable electricity and high-speed internet. Each would also develop its own productive identity based on its land, climate, resources and existing strengths—agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, technology or industry—creating 10 economic engines instead of concentrating opportunity in Port-au-Prince. AYITI would operate only three major commercial airports: NORTH — International Airport OUEST — Toussaint Louverture International Airport SOUTH — International Airport Other airport land that is no longer strategically necessary could be evaluated and repurposed for housing, universities, hospitals, agriculture, industry, parks or other national priorities, while preserving emergency aviation capacity where necessary. Because AYITI has a finite amount of land, every hectare matters. We must plan for the population of tomorrow before uncontrolled development consumes the land we will need for housing, agriculture, transportation, water, energy and public infrastructure. Build vertically where possible. Protect farmland, mountains, watersheds and coastlines. Reserve future rail and highway corridors today. The question is not simply where our country will be when that day arrives. The question is: What are we willing to build between now and then? Imagine an Ayiti where electricity never goes out. Where clean water reaches every community. Where trains connect our departments. Where our roads, bridges, hospitals and schools reflect the dignity of our people. Where our mountains are green again. Where our farmers feed the nation. Where our children grow up dreaming about what they will build in Haïti, not how they will escape it. Imagine Port-au-Prince rebuilt. Imagine our cities rising. Imagine our flag flying above a nation the world once again looks toward with admiration. That future will not arrive because we wished for it. We have to build it. Brick by brick. School by school. Road by road. Tree by tree. Idea by idea.
