What happens when you train a healthcare AI model not on medical textbooks, but on the information in doctors’ heads—and how they make decisions in the moment?

That’s the idea behind Knit Health, a new startup born from a cross-campus collaboration between experts from the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley Public Health, and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), incubated at the Center for Healthcare Marketplace Innovation (CHMI).

Co-founded by Jonathan Kolstad, Jonas Knecht, Maya Petersen, and Ted Robertson, Knit has built the first large clinical behavior model (LCBM)—trained on the anonymized electronic health records of more than 130 million patients across 30 major U.S. health systems, roughly a third of the American population.

It’s a powerful example of what happens when a university dissolves the boundaries between disciplines: economics, computational precision health, biostatistics, and behavioral design to build something new.

“There are only a couple of places where you have that confluence of interdisciplinary skills,” Kolstad says. “Berkeley is one of the top.”

Last week, we celebrated our first-ever CPH Cohort’s advancing to candidacy!

This event recognized their successful completion of qualifying exams and their transition into the final stages of their groundbreaking research.

CPH Co-Directors, Maya Petersen and Ida Sim provided opening remarks, sharing the road to establishing CPH as a PhD program and memories along the way.

Tremendous remarks were given by Jennifer Chayes, UC Berkeley Dean of CDSS, Nicquet Blake, UCSF Vice Provost and Dean, Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, and Lisa Garcia Bedolla, Vice Provost for Graduate Studies sharing their enthusiasm, recognition, and advice for the CPH PhD student honorees as they move forward with their next phase of groundbreaking research.

Our six honorees provided fantastic lighting talks about their research, highlighting the stark presence of inequality in our healthcare system and the data we use. These students are not only recognizing these clinical challenges, but working on solutions that continue to evolve with the changing world.

We are incredibly proud of how they’ve grown with the program, what they’ve accomplished so far, and the bright future each of these honorees have ahead!

Professor Ryan Tibshirani has been named Chair of the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley, effective July 1st, 2025.

“Ryan joined UC Berkeley in 2022 and has already contributed immensely to the Department, including as its Deputy Chair,” said CDSS Dean Jennifer Chayes. ”I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to Haiyan Huang for her service as Chair during the past three years. Her strong dedication to the Department and CDSS and her collaborative approach have been most valuable for successfully launching the College. I very much look forward to working with Ryan as he leads the Department during this important period of growth for CDSS. I’ve greatly appreciated how thoughtfully and effectively he has approached challenging questions for the Department and College and I am confident that the Department will be in the most capable hands and will thrive under his chairship. Please join me in warmly thanking Haiyan and Ryan for their service.”

In 1948, electrical engineering professor Paul Morton ’43 began work with students and faculty on the California Digital Computer (CALDIC). The project was meant to support education and research at UC Berkeley with a platform for “high-speed” computing.

“I thought that an institution which was teaching in this area would have to have demonstration equipment even if it was not very practical,” Morton later recalled.

In 2023, the UC Regents approved the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) as Berkeley’s first new college in more than 50 years. Today, our faculty and students remain at the forefront of computer science.

Don’t know how Berk will stay at the top w me outta here 🙂‍↕️

Jokes aside though, it’s been a privilege to have majored in both CS and Data Science here at Cal. To everyone I crossed paths with, thank you for making me a better person - really. From the Pink House to BDAB + Rishi and so much more, I found my lifelong friends turned family and couldn’t have asked for more from my time here. ++ special shout-out to my actual family for being my biggest supporters always. Appreciate and love u all; go bears always. 🧠🐻🫡✌🏽
