Last night I had a very good discussion with finance students from UCD and UCC alongside my party colleagues.

We spoke about the upcoming Budget and the issues that matter most to young people, including the challenges they face and the priorities they want to see addressed.

It was great to hear their views and have an open discussion about the issues affecting their generation.

Young people should have a real say in how we build a savings culture in Ireland.

Great to welcome students from UCD and UCC to Leinster House last night to discuss the new Savings and Investment Account, which will be announced on Budget day on 6th October.

Thanks also to my colleagues @maeveoconnellfg for hosting and @edward.timmins.wicklow and @cathalebyrne for giving the students their time as members of the Finance Committee.

Now that I have my results which also marked the end of my first year studying BSc Government and Political Science. A look back on the year.

November was a busy month. I was lucky enough to get involved with Government Times, the Department's newsletter edited by Dr. Aodh Quinlivan, and was given the opportunity to start a series called the 'Ahern Files' interviewing past graduates and practitioners of government. The inaugural interview was with Minister John Cummins TD @johncumminswaterford , who provided a fascinating insight into life as a Junior Minister, which I'm sure many readers found valuable.

Also in November, I organised a class trip to Dublin. With the support of John Paul O'Shea TD @johnpauloshea , we visited Leinster House, followed by a special visit to Government Buildings where we had a brief Q&A session with Tánaiste Simon Harris @simonharristd and his team to hear what it is like to work at the heart of government.

We also had the opportunity to visit @dkinireland and speak with Ambassador Lars Thuesen to hear about the Danish Presidency of the European Council, which was very insightful.

To round off November, I was privileged to visit the European Parliament and Commission on a study trip arranged through the European Commission and European Parliament Offices in Dublin which was a truly unique opportunity to learn about the work of both institutions ahead of the Irish Presidency.

February saw me chair a panel event on Cork's Local Economy for the UCC Economics Society, featuring leading experts in the field.

March was an especially busy month. I was delighted to be asked by Dr. Emmanuelle Schon-Quinlivan, alongside Rory Cregan and David O'Connell , to support the launch of Key to the EU a primary school programme focused on the EU that has been ten years in development.

Later in March, I co-hosted the 10th Annual UCC Economics Society Conference with Brian O'Carroll at Hayfield Manor Hotel. It was a great success, with over 120 attendees and three panels featuring leading experts in their fields.

To close out first year, I had the unique opportunity to meet Nicola Sturgeon and to show her UCC.

Now that I am fully back to normal, I am reflecting on what was a busy week last week. It was finally the week that months of planning and promotion came together for the 10th Annual UCC Economics Society Annual Conference , which I was privileged to direct and organise with my colleagues Brian O’Carroll and Isobel O’Callaghan.

The Society and I were delighted to host excellent speakers and, as I said in my opening address for the conference, some of the country’s leading experts in their respective fields.

I was delighted to chair my own panel on Economics in an Uncertain Time and Europe and Ireland’s position in the wider world. It was fascinating to hear the thoughts of the panellists:

Alex White SC – Director General of the Institute of International and European Affairs @iiea_hq

Maxime Augé – Head of the Economic Department in Dublin, French Treasury @franceinireland

Jude Webber – Ireland Correspondent for the Financial Times @financialtimes

Christine Kearney – Founder of Venga People

It really got me thinking about where Ireland is going internationally and where we need to improve.

I was also privileged to curate two other panels. The first was a reflection on Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations 250 years on and its impact, which was a fireside chat with Dr Robbie Butler (Chair) and Dr Eamonn Butler, Director of the Adam Smith Institute.

The second panel was chaired by my fellow Conference Director Brian O’Carroll and included Seamus Coffey (Chair of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (IFAC) and UCC), David Malone (CEO of the Irish League of Credit Unions), and Brian Hayes (CEO of BPFI).

We were also delighted to host John O’Halloran, President of University College Cork, for tea and coffee with the speakers.

A highlight of the day was definitely the lunch in the Vine Cellar in the hotel following the conference.

Thank you to Joe Fahey, as Chair of the Society, for the opportunity to run this year’s conference, and to the rest of the committee for their support. Of course, a special thank you to my fellow Directors Brian O’Carroll and Isobel O’Callaghan, and most of all to the 100+ attendees and speakers who made it all come together.

Our next World Peace Festival Event Announcement is part of Community Development Day on Tuesday March 10th: Doughnuts and Doughnut Economics!

This will be a interactive workshop facilitated from online by Carolina from the Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL).

We're so excited to explore this topic, as it unfortunately is not quite mainstream although it has gained growing attention during the past decade!
