This Friday will likely be Chanceโ€™s last college race.

About 10 years ago @chancetokubo came running home announcing โ€œI joined the cross country team at school!โ€ I think I laughed. At the time, he was a chubby 7th grade basketball player. By the end of Jr HS, he had a XC league championship, made a trip to Jr Olympics and topped the league in the 800/1600m. (I guess I probably shouldnโ€™t have laughed.)

Tyler and Scotty Jorgens and Ernie Morua started The Newark Project when he was a freshman, building a new direction for the distance running program at Newark Memorial. After 3 years of the process, including navigating the CoVid break, Chanceโ€™s senior year was a breakthrough. The team won their division race at the Clovis Invite. An individual and team MVAL league win was followed a 2nd place NCS finish and a top 8 in the CIF State Finals - uncharted territory for the school. While his senior track season wasnโ€™t quite as dreamy, it did cap with a run in the Sombrero Heat at the Dublin Distance Fiesta (along with a future teammate).

Going into his senior year at Newark, we figured if he really wanted to run in college, heโ€™d be at a Div III school. The recruiting season led him to accepting a spot as a walk-on at UC Davis. In an up and down tenure, a high point came when former Newark teammate, Muhammed Ahmed, joined the team and the 2025 Cross Country season finished with a 2nd place finish in the Big West (in Hawaii no less) and a top 10 place in the NCAA Western Regional.

Being a student-athlete has given him opportunities I could never imagined. Chance has completed all four years on the team (survived threats to being cut and watched the team bringing in faster guys every year to compete). Heโ€™s a testament to toughness and grit, even though he never finished at the top of a Big West or NCAA podium.

Thank you to all of those who have been a part of Chanceโ€™s journey, especially his teammates and coaches. He graduates from UC Davis in a few weeks with his degree in Applied Mathematics and will attend grad school at Carnegie Mellon in the fall. The journey continues to be amazing.
