University College Dublin (UCD) launches Ireland’s first university-led Artificial Intelligence Institute to empower researchers across all disciplines, accelerate scientific discovery and impact policy and regulation.

At the heart of the new UCD AI Institute will be an AI Design Studio - a team of computer science engineers, supported by expertise in ethics and compliance, who will work with researchers to adapt existing AI technologies and develop new tools to address major societal challenges.

The model is designed to make advanced AI capability available beyond computer science, enabling researchers in areas ranging from medicine and agriculture to climate, humanities and the social sciences to work alongside AI specialists.

The Institute will build on significant AI-enabled research already under way at UCD. This includes the current use of AI to create digital twins of paediatric cancer patients to support more personalised treatment; to improve the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia in maternal health; to advance weather forecasting; to develop precision agriculture; to support flood prediction; and to uncover new insights through cultural analytics.

Launching the new Institute, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD, said it was a “transformative development” for scientists across different fields, supporting them both here and globally.

The UCD AI Institute was launched at the flagship European Commission ‘AI in Science’ 2026 summit (AIS26), where over 1,000 global scientists, industry leaders and policymakers gathered at the University, as part of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The summit was opened at O’Reilly Hall by European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, who spoke about EU regulation but also the transformative impact of AI.

The new AI Institute will be led by a leading global expert in AI research Professor Robin Burke, who has pioneered personalised recommender systems, algorithmic ethics, fairness and transparency.

Meet Annabell 👋

Fresher’s Week is in full swing, so here’s one of our study abroad students you might bump into at it.

She’s with us this semester from Temple University in Philadelphia, and she’s already worked out that Dublin’s public transport is the easy part.

Annabell is taking over this account later in the semester. More of our Autumn 2026 students between now and then.

Welcome to the UCD Blackrock Library, serving students and staff of the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.

This historic library was originally a chapel built in 1895, and was refurbished to its current state and reopened in January 2007. The building is a blend of Classical and French Gothic styles, and is decorated with a total of 30 stained glass windows, 17 of which were supplied by the studio of Joshua Clarke, father of the renowned Irish artist Harry Clarke.

As a UCD student you are welcome to study and use the resources and facilities of this beautiful library, just bring your student UCard. At around 4km from the main UCD Belfield campus it’s worth a visit. See you soon!

☕ Welcome Coffee, Thursday 3 September.

This one is mandatory for all School of Business visiting students, Study Abroad, Erasmus and Exchange alike, and it is genuinely the easiest way to meet the people you will be sitting beside all semester.

The time and the venue are in your UCD email sent to all Autumn & Full year Study Abroad Students on 21 Aug. Check your inbox, and check your spam folder if you cannot find it.

Stay on afterwards for the Quinn Study Abroad Advisory Session, where you collect your swag items. We will walk down together. Bring yourself and your questions, nothing else.

See you Thursday. ☘️

“AI in 3 Minutes”

Latency, Cost, and Model Selection (The Tradeoff Triangle)
Picking a model isn’t a one-time technical decision — it’s an ongoing product tradeoff, and PMs who understand this triangle make much better calls than ones who leave it entirely to engineering.

Three variables compete: quality (how good the output is), latency (how fast you get it), and cost (what you pay per request). Bigger, more capable models are usually slower and more expensive. Smaller, faster models are usually cheaper but less capable.

Why this matters for your product decisions:

→ Not every feature needs your best model. A background classification task might do fine on a small, cheap, fast model, while a customer-facing reasoning task might justify the most capable one you can afford.

→ Latency isn’t just a performance metric — it’s a UX decision. A 5-second wait might be fine for a report generator and unacceptable for a chat interface.

→ This tradeoff shifts constantly as new models ship. A model selection made 6 months ago is worth re-evaluating, not treating as permanent infrastructure.

The one thing to remember: “Which model should we use” is a product question dressed up as a technical one. Own that decision — don’t hand it entirely to engineering and hope it aligns with what users actually need.

Next up: AI vs Generative AI (Stop Using Them as Synonyms)
