Wake up, researcher and get into research! ✍️ New Fall Projects are DROPING! 🍂 🔬

Join the Knight Research Scholar Program (KRSP) and gain hands-on research, one-on-one mentorship, and skills that strengthen your resume.🥼🥽 Apply through the link in Bio. 🚀

Within Dr. Santra lab, depending on the students’ interests, students may gain experience with:

-Nanomaterial Synthesis: Developing and optimizing nanoparticles and functional materials.
-Analytical chemistry: Using techniques such as LC-MS, UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, XRD, and electron microscopy.
-Biological applications: Investigating antimicrobial activity and the interactions between materials and biological systems.
-Formulation science: Developing deep eutectic solvents and other functional chemical systems.
-Data science: Applying computational tools, statistical analysis, and machine learning to experimental research.
-Engineering: Creating novel machinery for aerosolization of agricultural and medicinal syntheses, as well as exploratory material creation, and autonomous robots for agriculture.

Students will have opportunities to take ownership of research questions, participate in experimental design, analyze data, and present their findings. Depending on their contributions, opportunities for conference presentations, research theses, and scientific publications may also be available.

Bringing people together through chemistry!

The 2025 Southeastern/Southwest Joint Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (SERMACS) brought more than 1,000 researchers, educators and students to Orlando. Hosted and organized by the ACS Orlando Section, the meeting received the ACS ChemLuminary Award for Outstanding Regional Meeting.

UCF Chemistry faculty played a significant role in making the meeting happen, serving in leadership roles, organizing symposia, presenting their research and creating opportunities for students to participate and share their work.

Meetings like SERMACS create connections that can lead to new collaborations, professional relationships and possibilities for students.

“I think recognition like this is very valuable for UCF Chemistry and the College because it gives greater visibility to our research, our faculty and students, and the work being done at UCF. Hundreds of scientists came to Orlando for SERMACS, and many had the chance to interact with our faculty and students and learn about our research. I also hope the meeting encourages us to continue creating opportunities at UCF that bring scientists, alumni, students, and external partners together.”

- Vasileios Anagnostopoulos, Associate Professor, UCF Department of Chemistry

Congratulations on this achievement!

From crime labs to global justice systems, UCF researchers are setting new standards for how forensic evidence is analyzed.

Led by UCF Department of Chemistry (@ucfchemistry) Associate Professor and National Center for Forensic Science–affiliated faculty member Matthieu Baudelet, alongside chemistry doctoral students, the team developed the “Fantastic Four” chemical standards—hair, nails, bones and teeth—providing forensic scientists worldwide with consistent and reliable reference materials.

Created through interdisciplinary research, these standards improve accuracy in forensic anthropology and toxicology, supporting applications ranging from criminal investigations to the identification of human remains.

The work marks a major step forward for forensic science and highlights UCF’s role at the forefront of research that advances justice.

Thank you to everyone who has cheered us on this year. It means more than you know. These are some of the highlights of 2025 for us. Although the hard times get me down, I hope I can hold on to the good moments and remember the support of those around me during my toughest times.
Happy new year!

Thank you to @pixiedustpoodle for the inspiration to do a “2025 Wrapped”

Earlier this month, Dr. Stephen Kuebler, Professor of Chemistry (@ucfchemistry) and Optics at UCF’s Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (@CREOLatUCF), gave an inspiring presentation on nano-optics and bio-inspired technologies to students from Trinity Preparatory School of Florida (@trinityprepfl).

Through a lively talk and demonstrations of microstructures and nano-devices developed in his lab, students learned how scientists draw inspiration from nature’s brilliant hues and iridescence—like those found in opals, peacock feathers, and butterfly wings—to design materials that control light at the nanoscale.

Dr. Kuebler also highlighted the importance of connecting with students to spark curiosity in #STEM fields:

“K–12 students are the future of our communities at all levels, from Orlando to the Nation. We can help youth see ways to pursue their interests toward careers and life-long learning that strengthen our communities, and UCF can help them Reach for the Stars.”

The UCF College of Sciences proudly spotlights Dr. Fernando Uribe-Romo, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry (@ucfchemistry), whose early research contributed to work now recognized with the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The Nobel was awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar Yaghi “for the development of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs),” materials with vast potential in clean energy, catalysis, and environmental applications.

Dr. Uribe-Romo began working with Omar Yaghi, one of the Nobel recipients, as a visiting undergraduate at the University of Michigan, where he helped develop ZIF-8, one of the MOFs highlighted in the Nobel announcement, and later as a Ph.D. student at UCLA, where he worked on the development of Covalent Organic Frameworks, COFs.

At UCF, Dr. Uribe-Romo continues to advance the field through his research for sustainable energy and catalysis, including a recently developed family of photocatalytic MOFs named after UCF.

Congratulations to Dr. Uribe-Romo on this significant connection and contribution to groundbreaking research shaping the future of chemistry!

Today we bring to the spotlight Dr. Matthieu Baudelet, Secondary Joint Appointment in the Department of Anthropology and Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at UCF, and Kristen Livingston, a Chemistry PhD Candidate at UCF in Dr. Baudelet’s research group.

Kristen recently published her new research article “Build-a-Bone: Development of a Matrix-Matched Reference Material for Quantitative Analysis of Bone with Portable LIBS” in the Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry.

This project, developed with Amanda T. Williams, UCF Forensic Science Chemistry and Research Assistant at the National Center for Forensic Science, focuses on building synthetic bone-like materials that better mimic real bones. These new standards improve the accuracy of chemical analysis for skeletal remains, opening doors for stronger applications in forensic science, bio-anthropology, and beyond.

The work highlights the unique strength of interdisciplinary collaboration, showing how chemistry and anthropology come together at the National Center for Forensic Science to push the boundaries of research and discovery.
