Well . . . . It is so surreal how fast the last 4 years passed. Seeing the people I dormed with in the same hall, those who were in my Humanities courses, those who I frequently saw in Humanities Gateway, and of course, those whom I can call my friends, who supported me, and those who sat next to me, graduate. As we heard the speeches praising our humanistic wisdom and intelligence, we realize that we are the leaders of our generation during an AI crisis. At first, I was insecure, and still kind of am, about answering the most common conversation starter question, “What is your major?” And that was because I was not sure where I would fit into society with a BA in German Studies, and because I wasn’t sure how to respond to another common question, “What do you want to do with that?” But after four years, I learned that if I truly love what I am learning, am truly involved and never bored with lectures about Europe and its relations internationally, then I am right where I want to be. I am proud of who I have become, I have achieved more than what I dreamed of, and I cannot wait to see what’s next. I am eternally grateful for all the professors whom I have had the pleasure of being in their courses, and of course, grateful for their understanding of my horrible timing on turning in homework. Thank you to my family for their support and motivational messages. I love you! Thank you to my friends Guadalupe, Elyse, Grace, Andres, Eric, Grace, Aiden, Thea, Ximena, Ronald, Jasmine, who made memorable memories with me, whether it was late-night food runs, boba and coffee runs, study sessions, CoD Zombies, and much more. And friends whom I have met only for a short time, especially from work, thank you for allowing me to get to know you and converse meaningfully, even if it is for a short while. My journey isn’t over . . . I have new dreams, and I hope to share my journey with all of you! ZOT ZOT ZOT! 🐜🍽️ Photos by @babypena85

What determines which voices cross borders and reach global audiences? Why do some stories stay within their home countries while others connect with readers worldwide? Associate Professor Anke Biendarra, chair of the Department of European Languages and Studies at UC Irvine, has dedicated her scholarly career to understanding these dynamics. In the recently published “TEXT+KRITIK, Heft 246: Jenny Erpenbeck (2025)”, co-edited with Julia Schöll, Biendarra and seven other scholars examine different aspects of celebrated author Jenny Erpenbeck’s literary works, from her historical narrative techniques to her handling of East German generational conflicts. Biendarra’s expertise on German literature, transnationalism, migration and memory studies informs her contribution, which focuses on Erpenbeck’s impressive rise as a world author. Click the link in bio to read our Q&A and learn how Erpenbeck’s unflinching examination of Germany’s fractured past has made her one of the most compelling literary voices on today’s world stage.

Noah Stein (B.A., German studies, B.S., mechanical engineering, ‘21) achieved what most students strive for – to work at their dream job straight out of graduation. Noah’s education in German studies offered him much more than a historical perspective on his intended job industry – he felt that his courses in German studies gave him a space on campus to explore his creative side. While he used his scientific skills as a Vehicle Dynamics Lead Engineer for Anteater Formula Racing, Noah explored the journalistic side of racing as a lead contributor to the KUCI radio show “Speedway Sounds.” Be inspired by Noah and his time at UC Irvine by clicking the link in our bio.

Have you seen the Power of Imagination banners around campus? We hope the new designs inspire you to draw upon your imagination as a way of knowing, and acting in, our world. Our banners highlight many of the different ways scholars and students in the humanities use imagination to understand the past and imagine the future. Plus, we think these banners are just simply beautiful to look at (though the abstract designs do require your imagination–so be prepared to look and think!). Which banner is your favorite?! Tell us below! And to learn more about the Power of Imagination campaign click the link bio.
